Request for Black-necked Grebe sightings Hi folks, I was contacted recently by Richard Cook from Natural England, who is in charge of sorting out the proposed Special Protection Area (SPA): Falmouth Bay to St Austell Bay. One of the key species for which it will be designated is Black-necked...

Hi Mark, A couple of thoughts on this and ways our students at Tremough could help. (1) It seems a shame that EcoSoc (a team of willing and enthusiastic budding natural historians willing to donate their time) haven't managed to get more involved with CBWPS (an organisation in desperate need...

Easy enough mistake to make. I've apparently missed a lesserlegs, that should have almost have been viewable from the house! Was originally a wood sand apparently.

Lizard Brown Shrike Hi folks Just in case it's slipped people's attention, the Brown Shrike recorded on the Lizard (26-27th Sep 2009) has fairly recently been accepted by the BBRC (see here). At the time, its identity caused a great deal of debate. I submitted it, stating that record wasn't...

White-rumped Sand I've put a few photos of the White-rumped Sand at Deveron on my blog: http://piratebirding.blogspot.com/2011/09/white-rumped-sandpiper.html I gather it went missing today after I found it. Sorry for not sticking on the bird until people arrived - I'd left my phone at home...

Does anybody know anything about the Franklin's Gull on the Helford yesterday? Dan Chaney & I popped down to look for it today, checking the whole of Gillan Creek and Men-aver Beach, albeit at high tide (when smaller gulls are often absent from the area). We did see 16 Med Gulls (nine 1st...

I get the impression that there's a bit of a late Autumn passage of the two rarer skua species going on at the moment. I had really nice views of a juvenile long-tailed together with a pom off Bass Point this morning, the first dark-phased long-tailed I've seen in ages. I also had four skuas...

Never did twitch the gypo. Four Bitterns at Loe Pool on the WeBS count. On a seperate note - male Blackcap in my garden in Penryn today (has been there for a couple of weeks or so). Also, apparently the Ring Ouzel was still at Church Cove today (per Tony Blunden) looking less bedraggled, which...

A very rare bird in Cornwall I think (two records in the '06 Bird Report), both in the east of the county. I never thought I'd hear myself saying it, but I'm almost tempted to twitch that tomorrow (only from Penryn I hasten to add). Water Pipit still/back at Perprean - reckon you owe we a pint...

Ring Ouzel My diligent sifting of the thrush flocks in the hope of something rarer paid dividents today, albeit not quite in the manner I'd wished - i.e. no Black-throated Thrush. However, to my utter astonishment, I stumbled across a slightly scruffy-looking, but to all intent and purposes...

I've visited about 8% of the whole Lizard Peninsula since the new year. During that time, I've seen c. 4,500 Redwings and c. 1,200 Fieldfare. Assuming that the areas I've visited are representative (not unreasonable), that gives a figure of 56,250 Redwing and 15,000 Fieldfare on the Lizard...

A meandering walk over much of the southern part of the Lizard Peninsula today produced a staggering c. 150 Snipe along with a Jack Snipe and 4 Woodcock. Also a large flock of feeding Kittiwakes, 2 Fulmars and a few Gannets off Lizard Point.

Witnessed a sight rivalling an east coast fall today- large numbers of birds (thrushes mostly) feeding on the dead seaweed at Perprean Cove near Coverack. Also a Water Pipit there and a Purple Sand at Kennack Sands. Details on my blog.

Thor Veen, Will Jones (aka Jacana) & myself had similar luck from Pendeen this morning: http://piratebirding.blogspot.com/2009/11/after-last-nights-storm-tremough.html A few of your Phalaropes went missing (or did we just miss them?) , we missed the Artic Tern, our Arctic Skua was a dark...

Managed to get down and relocate it just before it got dark this evening. I wouldn't like to comment definitively on it's identity (leaning towards normal Greenish though). I'm sure the original finders saw it much better. I've posted what I know/saw on my blog - probably won't help much I'm...

A fairly lively hour and a half seawatching of Bass Point late this afternoon, particularly as a fishing boat went past discarding scraps with two Sab Gulls and 5 stormies in its wake. Total haul was: 2 juv Sab Gulls (E) 4 Sooty Shearwaters (W) 1 Balearic Shearwater (W) 1 Bonxie (W) 1 Puffin...

Hoopoe @ Windmill Farm Walking back to the van after a fruitless visit to Ruan Pool (The Lizard), I heard a Hoopoe calling. I didn't really believe my ears, but after about a 10 minute search of the adjacent fields, sure enough, up popped a Hoopoe. In true fashion, after reaching for my camera...

I had a group of about half a dozen siskens at Bodmin about 2 weeks ago, but haven't been in Cornwall long enough to have a feel for how unusual that is. Two 1st summer Med Gulls at Swanpool today. Seems to be good numbers around at the moment, with an adult and three 2nd summers there on Tue...
