    Cornwall Birding

Lots of Whimbrel about on Wednesday, I saw a group of around 70 in the Penzance area in the afternoon and another smaller group a bit later in the same area. I don't recall seeing such numbers before, is this unusual? I sent a report to CBWPS but unsure if they got it as recently upgraded...

    Cornwall Birding

Not got much birding in of late so spent an hour or two looking around the area of Mount's Bay late afternoon / early evening yesterday. Around 7-8 Tern species feeding offshore but distant - possibly Sandwich Tern's, some Gannet's also noted. Several Dolphin's following a Yacht accross the...

Went looking for the elusive Connor Downs Turtle Dove again on Tuesday. Cycled 5 miles and spent ages looking around & getting freezing cold with no success. Plenty of Collared Doves near the builders. Anyway cycled back, got cold again (and knackered going up the hills) only to find out it...

The Starlings first turned up here around the turn of the year. they are fascinating to watch and all got airborne about 0740 - 0750 this morning although they can and do roost in a few different locations nearby.

From my limited Chough knowledge I would say from April onwards would be the best time. Head for Lizard point at you should see plenty as this is well known as a breeding location with a watchpoint set up by the RSPB. There are other times and places to see Chough but from late Summer to early...

Both Kentish Plovers still showing well Friday afternoon on the beach by the lifeguard hut - very nice! No disturbance from dogs which was a bonus. :t: Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but this is the first record for Cornwall since the one day birds at Hayle Estuary in April 2009. One...

Thanks Dave - turns out it was correct. I thought it might have been a mis - sighting for a Grey Heron. Let's hope it stays around for a few days.

    Cornwall Birding

I haven't posted anything on any of the local birding sites as I cannot verify the accuracy of the report, but I was notified by a non - birder of a Common Crane over Hayle at around 1240 hrs today heading South. Unlikely I think but if anyone has heard anything similar I'd like to know.

Seems like you were unlucky with the weather - September can be quite a good month. Little owl quite a good find for Cornwall.

lastcornishman - are the G C Grebe showing any courting characteristics and how close are they coming? The reason I ask is that I have spent quite a few hours at Stithians trying to photograph the pair carrying out their courtship rituals however they do not appear to co-operate and generally...

I saw one on Christmas Day morning at Carbis Bay & up to 10 reported. Large numbers of Gulls & Cormorant offshore as well but no Divers noted.

    Cornwall Birding

If it is any help when I saw them about 10 days ago they were showing well off Carbis Bay but they were quite mobile and not really settling on the water. When at Marazion a couple of days ago I was told that they had been seen off St Ives Island but were quite distant. Interestingly no...

I cannot say how accurate the report was however suffice to say Rustic bunting was said more than once in the conversation. Are they seen in the UK at this time of the year?

    Cornwall Birding

I received an unconfirmed 2nd hand report of 2 Rustic Bunting on the cycle track between Sennen Cove & Lands End this morning. I was on the said cycle track this afternoon when I received the report but was unable to locate any. Anyone been down that path in the last few days?

Depends what they meant by "huge". Red Kites are not what I would call huge birds and I'm not sure that Red Kite would remain in an area of Cornwall for a period of days although it could well be possible. Description not detailed enough.

honeym glad you saw it well. I was there most of the afternoon and it gave us all tantalising glimpses of itself all too briefly before vanishing out of sight on the stream from the pool. Late afternoon it started showing reasonably well however by this time the cloud & rain had arrived so I...

Green Heron Is there anyone who went to see the Green Heron yesterday who can give directions to the Hidden Valley when arriving at Heligan please? Saves time faffing about trying to find my way when I get there as I have never been there before.Hopefully the bird will stay around until I do...

Sideshow Bob, I hope you enjoy your visit to Cornwall & hope the weather is kind to you?! Having spoken to the fellow local birders over the years I have never heard of any Nightjar populations. Not to say that there aren't any however I would bet there are more reliable and well known sites...

Find a field with cattle in it and there's a good chance they'll be there, provided they haven't moved on of course.
