Same here in Surrey. 2-spots are very hard to find. 10-spots are not common but I've come across a few.

Certainly looks like the pic in Roy, Brown and Lewington.

Size is certainly a good clue. Ideally, you should check out the leg colour (brown) and see if the pattern on the pronotum matches known examples.

Seems likely - was it around 6 mms long?

    The Ladybird thread

Following my discovery of a cream-streaked larva, featured a few posts ago, on a larch tree in our village (on the pavement outside the BT Openreach former telephone exchange!), I went back a few days later. I asked an engineer in the establishment if I could look for insects in the larch trees...

    The Ladybird thread

An unexpected 'lifer' for me - a cream-streaked ladybird in the middle of Lingfield village. I've been trying to keep an eye on a row of larches (most of which I cannot access). I found this larva on one of the few branches that overlaps the public pavement.

I don't know your part of the world so I'm afraid I cannot offer any suggestions. One of my ploys is to spend some time in Ashdown Forest when I can, as there is extensive heathland. I think there could be wood ant nests, plus lots of Scots Pines. At least you saw some good birds. I haven't seen...

Shouldn't be too difficult as I've only ever seen two species in addition to what I've observed in my garden! My main challenge is accessing suitable habitat round here, where even the woodland seems to be private - people don't like their pheasants and horses being disturbed.

My first 'lifer' of the year today. Sweeping a wildflower meadow I found at least three 'Meadow ladybirds' (Rhyzobius litura).

I'm getting more ladybirds but so far not much variety. This p.m. in my garden: 24-spot, 22-spot, heather x 3 (two started mating in my net); R chrysomeloides x 2.

Yes, well that would make things tricky! And I guess that made it hard to spend time taking photos, too. I photographed an 'inconspicuous ladybird' today only to find that it was a water beetle (about 3mms long).

Great going! If you are doing the grey-headed lapwing, there seem to be good ladybird sites near Newcastle. Havannah nature reserve, for example. Just as a matter of interest, do you report your sightings somewhere?

Had my 10th species for the garden (this year) yesterday. Cream-spot.

Were you beating the larch? - I wouldn't have the nerve in such a public spot!

This event on ladybirds might be of interest? https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/celebrating-ladybirds-developing-our-knowledge-through-citizen-science-tickets-334678391077

Not much whitefly out yet round me - but I think the SE is probably colder than Bristol at the moment.

    The Ladybird thread

Ah, seawatching in a reed bed is a new thought!

    The Ladybird thread

Another fruitless search of a reedbed today. It's hard to tell whether I'm not good at spotting water ladybirds or whether they are uncommon in my area. There is one 'tick' in a square km near me but I think it must be on private land. (At least I found my first siskins of the winter so it...

Just epaulet today. I must visit Edinburgh one winter.

    The Ladybird thread

I'll attach a couple. It was about 3 mms long. ID is only a guess as there are so many species.

    The Ladybird thread

I spent a fair while yesterday looking at broken reeds in two different spots. I must have taken apart about 30 stalks but didn't find any ladybirds (although I did find a very colourful spider). The reedbeds are only about four years old so I might try a longer-estblished one next although it...

    The Ladybird thread

I tried some Typha but all I found was a small larva, possibly of a moth. I'll try again tomorrow.

    Thanks - you're a veritable oracle!

    The Ladybird thread

So do I ... along with a whole stack of others. What is your tecnique for finding marsh ladybirds? Sweeping reeds requires a wet-suit, or at least waders, round here!
