Middlebere Had a good Monday at Middlebere. Dartfords out on the heath near the parking pull-in and a number of Wood Lark parachuting out of the sky. Off down the lane to the National Trust cottages there were a lot of parents and juveniles hopping about: Growing flocks of Linnet. Great and...

Where is the best place to find the Redstart at Morden? It's a new patch for me. Am I right in thinking that the decoy cottage is the pile of bricks near the bee hives? Thanks for any help!!

Would someone be able to share directions to Morden Bog and the Decoy Pond. I know it's part of Wareham Forest but...

Finally got round to checking out Radipole and Lodmoor in the sunshine today. Picked up all sorts of bits and peices. Radipole had Reed Warblers and Cettis Warblers all around the walk to the North Hide. The view out of North Hide showed up Shoevlar and Sand Martins while a Wheatear...

Starlings are easily in their hendreds now and there without fail every evening from around 1600-1700 near Asda at the end of Holes Bay in Poole. Yesterday there were no less than 3 Sparrowhawks and 2 Peregrine Falcon sending the flock scattering in all directions. Its amazing to stand in the...

    Dorset birding

The number of Starlings flocking around Poole near Asda are getting pretty significant now. They seem to start coming in at around 4pm in various batches and group together in their characteristic style for about an hour or so before going down into the trees behind the old RNLI HQ around 1715...

As I type there are large flocks of Starling swirling around outside my office in Poole town centre! Really strange...not ever seen them flock like this here! Holesbay was very grey and cold today with drizzle turning to sleet on and off. It all looked a bit quiet and sleepy out on the low tide mudflats. The usual Teal and Widgeon were waddling around sniffing bthrough the exposed seaweed and Red Shank and Black tailed Godwit were sifting through the...

    Dorset birding

Finally managed to co ordinate a long lunch with remembering my bins and took a walk around Holes Bay. Couldnt believe how much was out there: Teal, Black tailed Godwit and Widgeon in their hundreds. A lone pair of Pintail quite a way out. Merganser also out in the middle. Avocet further...

I have definately seen a lot of Redwing over Poole in the last couple of days. All seem to be moving West or North. What is the reason for the mass movement? Is this a seasonal thing or is this particular migration driven by the current weather patterns?
