If the picture you posted is of the Great Northern Diver then I would suggest that it actually was a Black Throated Diver. Reasons: Sloping forehead, dark bill and in particular large white patch on the flank. Try to get to the ferry late afternoon when many Grebes, Divers and sea Ducks head out...

Couldn't agree more Chris. Keep posting Woody for those of us who are not getting out much these days its always nice to know what's going on in the wider world, that is beyond the back garden. In that spirit, there have been up to at least 99 Mediterranean Gulls hanging around on the Wimborne...

Hi Chris Good to see you are getting out and about. Male and female are very similar in Red Admiral. I suspect those that are not showing the blue are worn adults. I get Purple Hairstreak in the garden and they look quite brown on occasions when worn. Virtually no sign of the Purple colouring...

I frequently see a pair that were obviously breeding about half way along the road from Wimborne St. Giles to Wyke Down. They frequented the area near some old barns on the North side of the road. Would add that I haven't looked this year but worth a go? Ray

Hi Dave When I lived in Somerset, near Taunton, I regularly saw Nightjars on the Quantocks and Blackdowns. They would be about a 45min journey down the M5 to get to the area. They must have been on the Mendips as well although I spent most of my time in that area around Chew Valley Reservoir...

Response to "is the blue-winged teal male or female ? Miked" Hi Mike My understanding is that it is a juv female BWT. It seems to like the large island to the N of the large lake and is often (like others) with Shoveler. Yesterday I think it must have been kipping on the Island. Still yet to...

No sign of Blue Winged Teal when we left about 12 noon but there were a lot of ducks sleeping on the lee side of the island, where there was also a pair of Shoveler and a female Goosander again. Absolutely...

Brief visit to Longham Lakes yesterday produced a redhead Goosander near the large island. However wimped out when it started to rain heavily and missed Smew and BWT. Oh blow!! Today visited Monkton up Wimborne or as it has become known now as Wyke Down. Stay from 10:45 to 12:15 in high wind...

Coincidently some of the BBC footage was shown on The One Show last night. If you missed it you might be able to catch it on BBC iPlayer. My brother's tip is look for the little cluster of dog walkers, they usually are watching them. Good luck. Ray
