Yes, it has been a male reported this year. I can't remember if it was last year or the year before, but I think there were three or four Smew up there. Also, last year, I did get to see my first male there.

I have not strayed too often from my Kinghorn/Seafield patch this year, but this morning, I felt that a winter visit to the St Andrews area could be productive. I have a friend who I have been introducing to bird watching this year, and he was able to join me, so with reports of Smew, Crossbill...

Backwater Reservoir to the north of you can be good in winter. I've been there a few times with Barry (Stonefaction), and we have had Great Grey Shrike. I think Barry has had one of the eagle species there also. No Dunnock on your garden list?

Lunchtime, I decided to venture out, as the recent heat seemed to have subsided a little. Reports of Pectoral Sandpiper and White-rumped Sandpiper lured me to Letham. No sign of the W-R S, however, a few other nice birds present with Ruff, LRP and Water Rail seen.

And an empty nest at Loch of Lowes. Second chick has fledged. (y)

I did a quick Google, and it seems the most likely answer is a brain affecting parasite.

First chick has just left the nest at Loch of Lowes.

    Tayforth Birding

Looks like chick number three at Loch of Lowes is dead or dying. It was absolutely savaged by one of the other chicks (number 2, I believe) in a frenzied attack this morning. I know this is natural, but, when I get back on the platform, how do I explain it to guys who were cheering every time...

I made a fleeting visit to Loch of Lowes on Tuesday. My daughter had an appointment in Blairgowrie, so I managed to grab 20 minutes at the loch. On the platform, we have been again watching the nest on the big screen in the control room, so I just wanted to be able to say I have actually seen...

I have walked it through on Google Maps. Assuming you are coming from the south, get onto the M9, then get off at Junction 7 following M876 to Kincardine Bridge. At junction 3 follow A905 too Skinflats. At roundabout take right exit for A905 Skinflats. At 2nd roundabout go straight ahead...

Not a place I have ever been to, but is on the “must do“ list. From memory of looking at the directions in the past, if you are heading south over the Kincardine Bridge, you go through the first roundabout, then take the next left off the main road. There is a little map on the linked website...

    Tayforth Birding

The male's eyelid seems to have sorted itself out, and is now open again. Big salmon brought into the nest this morning, so the chicks are eating like royalty.

Third chick has hatched. Another fish brought in by the male.

    Tayforth Birding

Unless I've just not noticed before, it seems that the male at Loch of Lowes (LM12) has just lost an eye, or it has closed up. It has been scrapping with intruders this week, so maybe picked up the injury then. It delivered a fish (Grayling, I think) this morning, but nothing since. You would...

    Second chick now hatched.

First egg at Loch of Lowes, now in the process of hatching. Third osprey still buzzing the nest yesterday.

Following an early morning visit to my Seafield patch, I arrived home to find a WhatsApp alert on my phone (rarely take it with me) for a Temminck's Stint at Letham Pools. I oohed and aahed for 20 mins, then committed to the half hour drive. I arrived at the pools just after 10 am, to find a...

    Tayforth Birding

Due to parental responsibilities (Dad taxi), I ended up at a loose end in the middle of Fife yesterday, with six hours to burn. Well! What's a man to do, but hit the local floods and sandpits. First up was Letham Pools. I stopped at the east end of the pools, and as it was raining lightly, I...

There was also an awful rumpus at about 1 pm, when a third adult landed on the nest. It was well seen off by the male.

    Tayforth Birding

Yes she has. She stood up at about 06:15 this morning, and you can see the egg.

There is a loch (Lairds Loch) to the south east of Coupar Angus that is stocked with Tench. Fourteen miles away, so seems to be within range. Of course there may be a private fishery that is closer, but does not show up on Google. A couple more Tench brought in yesterday, but they are back on...

    Tayforth Birding

The male osprey at Loch of Lowes seems to have found a supply of Tench. I've seen two large ones brought in today. I wonder where they would find Tench in that area? Maybe a stocked commercial fishery.

I knew it was probably a bit early, but I decided to try for Whinchat today, up Glenvale in the Lomond Hills. Arriving at the carpark, I was met by hill mist, but by the time I had climbed halfway up the track to John Knox pulpit, I was walking in that rare scottish phenomenon called sunshine...
