    Field work ... hard work!

no, with the longest tertials looking like primaries. I just really liked the bar on the coverts and decided I wanted it to belong to a ST, wing formula says sky of course! or actually, why not a ST with worn tertials, they are horrifically!

    I think I see a white-backed woodpecker, but don't know if that's reasonable as a suggestion.

    Field work ... hard work!

I'll try starling. Your curlew photo may be of use in the ID thread where a whimbrel (IMO) is being identified as a ruff!
  11. nickderry

    Field work ... hard work!

    I'll say a ruff.

    Field work ... hard work!

No, never been. One day! Here in this part of France this is the hardest to see (after the three-toed, of which there are about 10 pairs in the country) Don't see them all that often.

now the caffeine has come and gone, non hybrid Picus canus for me too - just had trouble with the rump looking like part of the wing. No excuses, especially as I painted one of these with his head up the same this week!

hybrid grey-headed woodpecker x siskin x hawfinch. I'll come back when the coffee has had its effect. :-)

    Field work ... hard work!

I think that's the bird! Underwing matches perfectly.
  17. nickderry

    Field work ... hard work!

if the underwing is as dark as it looks, goldeneye does seem the closest.

    Field work ... hard work!

I'll try curlew, but I really am just guessing.

    Field work ... hard work!

I suppose a juvenile stonechat is as good as any guess.

    Field work ... hard work!

I'm just going to say that the legs aren't really as dark as they look and say song thrush.
  23. nickderry

    Field work ... hard work!

really hard. I'm thinking some sort of pipit, but that tail seems to be too plain, other thoughts are out as the legs look very dark. I'll try water pipit then.
  24. nickderry

    Field work ... hard work!

not an easy one, I'll try with crested lark.
