Driving back from a few days in Cornwall this afternoon and I am fairly sure there was a dead Golden Pheasant by the side of the road about four miles past the Roadford turn off. I was driving at 70mph at the time so can't be totally sure. Shame it had to fly all the way from Norfolk and then...

According to the recent pager messages the Spoonbills at Islay Marsh RSPB are viewable distantly from the B3233 at Midway Motors. Does that mean they aren't viewable from the coastal path at Islay Marsh. Thanks. Roger

Just before you arrive at Prawle village you pass a pond on your right. Take the next turn right and park on the grass verge on the right side of the road after about 400 yards. The road bends around sharply to the right but on the bend you will the start of the track that leads down to Pig's...

The Crossley ID Guide to Eastern Birds of North America is due to be published in a couple of weeks time. I wondered whether any older Devon Birders remember a young Richard Crossley that lived near me in Tiverton back in the late 1980s early 1990s. Whilst he was a student in Plymouth he was a...

This is from the RSPB site when you do a search on Brent Goose: Where to see them Estuaries and saltmarshes. Main concentrations of dark-bellied birds in the Wash, the North Norfolk coastal marshes, Essex estuaries, the Thames Estuary and Chichester and Langstone Harbours. Most light-bellied...

Pick any spot on the Exe Estuary in Winter and if you can't see Brent Geese then you you aren't looking!!!. There are small numbers of Brent Geese around Kingsbridge and also a few in Cornwall. Roger

Most people at this time of the year park in the road outside the car parks rather than pay. Go in to the car park and the marsh is at the far side of the left hand car park. If you then go in to the car park where the Cirls are then you can also view the other side of the marsh. You should...

I wondered why RBA always say "park in the RSPB car park and walk south along the canal path". If you park in the RSPB car park why walk to the canal path when the footpath along the edge of the marsh is much shorter. Seems like 103 good reasons. Hope you get a refund Jack. Roger

There are now two prominent signs at the entrance to the track which say "East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve". The "Yarner Wood" sign is still there but it is set back a bit from the entrance although clearly visible. Roger

Hi James There was also a "twitchable" Whooper Swan in North Devon at the same time and on the day I saw both swans I also saw the Waxwing in Barnstaple. Seaton may have had some great birds in 2009 but please don't knock North Devon, it has given me several "year ticks" this year. Happy new...

The Spotted Sandpiper was still on the river at Topsham this morning frequenting the area under the M5 bridge. There were also 4 Common Sandpipers there although the Spotted Sand was by itself. It walked out of sight up the channel on the far left of this area whilst I was there although I...

Thanks for that Tom, I will have a look on Friday weather permitting. This morning the first winter Grey Phalarope was showing down to about 15 feet on the very small pool of flood water on your left after you cross the first bridge on to The Skern. There were about 500 Golden Plover and at...

Wilson's Phalarope showing well this afternoon at Exminster Marshes on the last pool on your right before the canal car park. At least four Curlew Sandpipers on the Clyst from the viewing platform and an Osprey perched on a post. I was surprised to see four Avocets at Bowling Green amongst the...

The Penduline Tit was very obliging this morning feeding continuously at the tops of bulrushes in the small reed bed at the west of the boating lake in Goodrington. This was despite the fact the two Council workmen were working in the reed bed only a few feet away at the time, pulling up chunks...
