Sorry but AFAIK Woodlark sites in Devon are not publicised.

Hi Stevie2011. I'd guess your best chance is in the Froward Point / Kingswear direction. But I expect you've guessed that. You should catch up with them OK: they're pretty active at the moment with mouths to feed.

I'd say 80+ miles to Labrador Bay RSPB, not as far as the South Hams. (One of the few sites that does get published).

Well done Paul, I've suspected this particular call was from an imitator and I daresay others have too.

    Devon Birding

Hm, maybe not, the website now says no confirmed sightings since last Sat.

Hi Mike. I'm assuming no-one has PM'd you on this. Woodlark is hanging on here in a unique habitat. Its breeding areas are not generally disclosed; and I'm afraid that applies to wintering grounds as well, in case they decide to stay and breed. There are better counties in which to see...

No, this Bow Creek is not near Aveton Gifford. It's on the Dart Estuary.

Hi Joan. They are based on the Dart estuary. Breeding was recorded in 2005 and 2007-2009 (the same site, Bow Creek). Some observers may not bother with them but your record is definitely worth sending to the county recorder Steve Waite ( recorder "at" devonbirds.org ).

Calling all Torquay birders SX96 (Torquay, Babbacombe and points north and inland) has nowhere near as many species proved breeding as there ought to be for the Atlas. Any evidence you have from previous years, or obtain this year, will be very welcome. And of course, for the Devon Atlas too...

Mike With high tide around 9-10 this isn't the ideal day I'm afraid. If you can get there early enough then try Bowling Green Marsh RSPB (Topsham) - the only place with a hide - best at high tide. Brent Geese can also be found at Topsham (east of the village, towards Dart's Farm) or Starcross...

Fog all day yesterday (Wed), still dark outside at the mo but looks a bit clearer. Good luck.

Did a BBS on Haldon yesterday. Most of the 'good' birds were just outside the square: just one Turtle Dove (let's hope there will be more later), two Tree Pipits in song (also a low number for this area), and finally a couple of Crossbills back at the car. However it was good to find so many...

A stroll on Dartmoor yesterday (Chinkwell Tor area) was very pleasant indeed. The list of birds seen or heard ? - one Meadow Pipit.

You could try this one, Paul has been criticised in the past for publishing details of rare breeders but AFAIK most people use it.

Welcome to the forum Mark, as you can see there are plenty of Devon birders on here so you should feel at home !

My half-hour dog walk yesterday morning gave about 105 Skylarks over, to south, in groups of various sizes; three Lapwings with one group. Looking at the Warren website this morning shows me what I missed !

Attempted a TTV yesterday but failed - Country Buses not running. Ended up at Paignton harbour where a dozen Turnstones followed me round, what do people feed them on down there ? Got back to Dawlish to find the place overrun with Blackcaps, well, a few anyway, certainly a lot more than there...

And one from my garden yesterday evening as well, on a neighbour's roof, not sure yet whether immature or adult female. First there for quite a few years.

Me too, fair numbers of Redwings and very few Fieldfares. My Atlas TTV yesterday (SX86A, Totnes and nearby) produced 29 Redwings and no Fieldfares.

Thanks everyone for the info re the Preston Pied Wheatear (and thank you to "Mark" for your email). Perry, I could be on pints of champagne if I find one on a TTV, you have been warned.

Old Pied Wheatear record My Atlas tetrads this winter are in SX86 (the square with Totnes at the SW and Paignton at the SE). I see there's a record in the last Winter Atlas (1981-1984) of Pied Wheatear Oenanthe pleschanka in this square. Does anyone know anything about this please ? (I...
