I was lucky enought to see the Red Footed Falcon on Exminster marshes this afternoon. It was sat on top of a bush, equidistant between the RSPB car park and the viewing platform. It's head was the colour of clotted cream with a dark eye patch, its chest was a lighter cream and it had dark grey...

Haven't yet seen any Fieldfare at Staverton yet but over the last few weeks there has been an increasing number of Mandarin Ducks on the Dart below Staverton Bridge at dawn. It started with the odd female but this week I've seen 14 on the river bank or sat on one of the fallen trees in the...

Was walking by the R.Dart on my local patch whilst walking my dog this morning when I heard agitated calling. Looking into the tree overhanging the river approx 10 feet away was a young kingfisher sat on a branch. One of its parents then landed next to it holding a fish in its bill and made the...

Well I had no luck with the Lesser Whites last night. Just the usual stonechats, with at least one fledgling, jays, willow warblers, tree pipit, linnets and yellowhammers. Haven't found a Whinchat here yet this year.

Red legged Partridge on Haldon today but so far I haven't come across any Turtle Doves, although the strong wind didn't help today. Think I might try looking for some lesser whitethroats around Chudliegh Knighton tomorrow if the weather holds. There was a Garden Warbler there last week.

My first Goosander ducklings of the year this morning. 10 of them on the Dart. Two Common Sandpipers also on the river - they generally appear at this time of the year and stay but stay for only one or two days at the most.

The steam railway runs from Buckfastliegh, through Staverton to Totnes and this morning there was a large group of Railway enthusiasts filming and taking photos of them in the area you describe and down at Staverton railway station. I see them there most bank holidays, standing around hoping to...

Well if its Osprey shaped, why could it not be the Osprey? There is regularly one around Powderham and the Exe and I also saw one on the Teign by the Passage House Inn the other day. Another possible, although I would have thought less likely option, is that it was a Honey Buzzrd - there have...

Was sat outside the Passage House Inn at Kingsteignton having coffee this morning, telling some friends about the Osprey on the Exe, and 5 minutes later it was flying up and down, fishing in the river, only a few yards away from us. Moved on after about 5 minutes.

Two families of Green Woodpeckers down by the Dart at Staverton this morning with some Spotted flycatchers by the bridge. They have started renovating the Mill and its buildings recently - had to happen but I wonder what effect it will have on the birdlife. This year Swifts,Swallows,Nuthatches...

Staverton Owls I was in the Churchyard in Staverton this morning walking the dog before work and heard a persistent whistling coming from one of the trees. Looking up there was a young Tawny Owl, still covered in fluffy grey downy feathers apart from the end of its tail, sat in the middle of a...
