Not for many a year now, I'm afraid... Whole county's a bust for them. We get the odd passage bird for lucky individuals, but that's it. :(

Exminster is a much bigger site to get around and is currently very short on water and long on vegetation. So for a quick high tide visit, Bowling Green is the choice.

Tavistock is the wrong side of the Moor for me, I'm afraid. The nearest site I know is White Wood, below Venford Reservoir [though that's not very far from Tavvy, and indeed a very nice drive]. Plymbridge Wood may be worth a try, but I don't know it well enough to be sure.

Haldon Forest is on the Haldon Ridge - it being the line of high ground between the Teign and Exe valleys. I don't know exactly where the sightings you refer to were made from, but there are two well-known raptor viewpoints; by the Mamhead Obelisk, and the old 'Raptor Viewpoint', whose car park...

    Certainly could! Nice male. :t:

Hmm, with the [in no particular order] way it seems to be 'holding it's bum up' in the water, the dark running up the back of the neck and onto the upper head, the size and position of the eye, the bill shape and colouring, the tiny bit of white at the bill-base {ie. immature} vs the neck...

    Sounds like Treecreepers to me.

After dipping late yesterday evening, I'm pleased to say that the first summer female Red-footed Falcon was present again at Exminster today - both hawking up to a fair height and pouncing stuff on the ground. Utterly gorgeous bird; well worth the trip, the baking heat, and even the horseflies!

The only sign for Yarner is at the entrance, and you can't read it while driving as the writing's too small! Directions; Coming from Exeter, turn off the A38 for Bovey Tracy, go along the Bovey bypass to the roundabout with the stone jenga in the middle, turn left [marked Haytor and Becky...

As is unfortunately often the case with seawatching, [I say unfortunately, because I hate getting up in the morning! ;) ] it was at the start; 7-30 'til 9-00, with all the Puffins and Balearics, and 113 of the Manxies. The front passed just before 9-00 and the majority of birds were either in...

Quite surprised to be the only one at Berry Head this morning, but glad I dragged myself out of bed. In 4 1/2 hours [and mostly the first 1 1/2]; 5 Puffins, 3 Balearics, 136 Manxies, 4 Red-throated Divers [2 s/pl ad., 2 imm.], 1 diver sp., and 1 Great Northern Diver [imm.] past south, plus 1...

The 'tall white post' is the crane from the disused stone barge on the River Clyst - looks a bit like a two-part yacht mast. From the hide at Bowling Green, its at the back on the right. Its the favourite spot for Ospreys to munch their lunch - when not occupied by Osprey there's often a...

There were two blue morph Snow Geese knocking about on Exminster Marsh last winter, could these be the same birds? In the howling wind on the Exe this afternoon it felt just as cold as it is....

I know Ken's already answered this, but I'd like to add that if you zoom in on the RBA map, you can even see the goose's li'l island [NW not SW corner - shows how turned around I got this morning..! ;) ] Roger, 'Frying Pans' is marked on the OS map by the road to the SE of the quarry - I don't...

Five little words.. Well, I went, I got quite muddy, I almost got flattened by a big dump truck thing, and I eventually saw the bird. I think the OS need to do a little updating - only one pool marked for Black Hill Quarry, I reckon there's at least 5 there! I think some different instructions...

Yeah, me too.... Darnit, why am I feeling resigned about this? This is either a daring escapologist or a bold explorer, and either way it deserves our attention. Mark's gone there, looked at it, and judged it on his observations, and kudos to him for that. Tomorrow I'll do the same. And hey...

So it looks good, Mark? I hadn't gone for it, being put off by the 'presumed escape' tag it's always been given... I'd assumed that that meant a big bit o' plastic, or 'Property of Paignton Zoo' label, or something! ;)

Male Penduline Tit still at middle Clennon 'Lake'. Went there straight from work and it showed very nicely, in same spot as yesterday, until 1445 when it evidently tired of the ever-increasing rain and flew into the thick cover of the bank between the path and the caravan park - giving a nice...

Just in case anyone's unaware - Sardinian Warbler still at Berry Head, frequenting first set of scrub on the left from the car park towards North Fort. Very elusive and active, but gave some gorgeous [if brief] views. Also Yellow-browed Warbler, same location.

What Joe doesn't mention is that he took this very nasty injury like a Trojan - not so much as a whimper. Though perhaps getting the Wryneck may have something to do with it! ;) Slightly more seriously, I hope those healthy young bones of yours knit back together quickly, and that a week or so...

Went for a stroll to Fur Tor with the folks today. Plenty of Mipits and Skylarks, Swallows moving North, and Wheatears moving in. Postbridge provided the ever-reliable Willow Warblers, also a very vociferous Green Woodpecker, 2 posing Cuckoo, a Treecreeper...

    Devon Birding

Welcome back Joe! Looks like you had a great trip, and I reckon you've still got a shot at both Eider and Crake. [He says, ever the optimist..] They've both been elusive, but there's been good advice on this thread about seeing them [which I won't...

And there was me kicking myself for not being able to drag my lazy behind out of bed... Spent 4 hours getting thoroughly rained on at the Nose today for sporadic returns. After a Purple Sand on the end of the Nose when I arrived, [there's an odd...
