Yes I now see what the problem would be,I was picturing something on the lines of the old York plant. We often use the A168 as a quieter route alongside the A1M looks like that option will have gone if this goes through. The ownership might give local people a few sleepless night as ME countries...

Keith, the sugar beet plant cannot be as big a blot as the incinerator just up the road along the old red wall. If the plant went ahead surely local farmers would grow beet as they did until the old York factory closed. Spent many an hour in days gone by hoeing out the weeds among young beet...

It would have been nice if Charlie knew about the Spoonbills on his patch. I first met him down the bottom of Cut Lane long before I was aware of RSPB wardens as a species. It was people like Charlie that really impressed me with their knowledge of bird life.

Not sure if you have tried Timble yet Keith but recent reports have given better sightings along with Nightjar just up the road at Stainburn Forest. The easiest access is from Norwood Lane car park between Beckwithshaw and Bland Hill, easy walk in to the cleared area.

Some of our members were there Saturday and had them roding along the main track quite early on,about 8pm. It had been a showery day so that may have affected their timing. They were also seen in the Bewerly area near P.Bridge the same evening.

We had at least 3 singing male Wood Warblers at Bolton Abbey yesterday, about 400 yards upstream of the bridge at Cavendish. An old tree with a fantastic show of roots at the side of the path is a good marker for location.

Like Keith, my year list at 166 was my worst for yonks, mainly restricted through health but good thing most of them were Yorkshire birds. Must try harder this year and aim for 200 minimum.

There is still a lek near Langdon Beck,at least I hope so as our club has just booked a trip to see the lek through Natural England in April '16. The Shaw Farm birds are probably the mast reliable ones I know,we often sit watching them while having lunch in the car parked on a flat bit of ground...

Hi Geordie, welcome to birding in Gods own County !! It may be worth getting local Ordnance Survey maps and explore the dales running up to the moors above Helmsley.Although most of our birding is done in the dales we do try to visit the Moors.Winter may a good time for looking out for raptors...

Linda,if it is the bird I am thinking of it wanders upstream as far as Killinghall bridge/Ripley.We see one matching this on a regular basis but can only make it into a very pale Common Buzzard. Not as pale as one seen above Gouthwaite last week, almost white gives a few of our members a headache...
