Any ideas on what I can do in the next two days to get four more for my year list? I move to Australia on Saturday and I was hoping to get my longest year list before I went. Didn't help that I wasn't including category C birds this year, but I'm four birds short...

I'd heard it was pretty bad, but I did see and hear a lot more of them a few days before in only half the area - they tend to come out a bit more in good weather, so I'll try a count again on a sunnier day.

Heard the Tawny Owl from the same spot again last night. Yateley Common this afternoon showed only four Dartfords, but they tend to skulk a bit when the weather's not so good anyway. The same pair of Linnets were about and this time, I could cheeping from a nest just off of the path. Several...

Also heard a Tawny Owl calling from The Meadows roundabout at ~10.30 last night, which was rather nice.

Moor Green Lakes was quite nice this afternoon. I had been planning on going to Staines Reservoir, but my brother was short of petrol, so Moor Green instead. Just as well as a Little Stint had turned up and was showing really quite well in the new workings. There were also six Green...

Anyone familiar with Marek Walford's excellent Berksbirds.co.uk news site will be pleased to hear he's now made one for Hampshire bird news, too: http://www.goingbirding.co.uk/hants I used to use the Berks birds site a lot and it's pretty handy.

There's a slim chance I might get to do a bit of local birding on one of my all-too-rare trips home next month. It'll be nice to stomp the old patch again. It'll be even nicer to se some of the birds I've barely seen since I left as well. I've only seen one Dunnock the whole time I've been...

Well, no whinchat over Yateley common South, but there were a lot of stonechats and more Dartford warblers than I have ever seen in one day. Also a tree pipit and a small group of five woodlarks. On the way back, bumped into my brother and he took me over to Moor Green where we watched the...

Out for a bit in the morning to see if I can see anything on Yateley Common South before flying off to Switzerland again, thereby closing my British list for the year... Not managed nearly the amount of birding I wanted to do while I was here. Did however see a lesser whitethroat on the River...

Don't know if it's still about (been here in Switzerland for a few months now...), but there was a very obliging kingfisher at Lavell's Lake, which is part of Dinton Pastures LNR near Winnersh. Normally a fairly good place for birds anyway, but Lavell's is probably the better of the lakes for...

Piano wire at neck height should do it... Not that I would ever condone such a practice... Things are going well out here - nice people, weather and birds. Got five lifers the other day in a single afternoon (red-crested pochard, white-winged tern, great white egret, black kite and yellow...

Some nice waders about at Moor Green, according to the Berks birds website. Waders are something we're short of here (although I did see a common sandpiper)...

The three of us in the kitchen were thinking 'what's that call?' And then we saw it silouhetted and found we had a parakeet over the back garden. We're some miles from the neck of the woods they usually hang around in, but when it moved towards the front garden, we saw it was grey, slightly...

Wheatear also seen at Dorney Wetlands today (not by me, though...). In addition to the birds I saw on Yateley Common South the other day, I also got a really ropey shot of a wood lark, which is always nice to see. They must have come back after disappearing off to farmland for the winter. The...

Nice male kestrel at Shepheard's Meadows. Got very close to it and it was hovering right over Mrs Boris' head. Not many voles there, I'm afraid. Also saw the kingfisher on the river after several months of it not being about. A few chiffchaffs singing along the river now, which is nice on a...

Dartford warblers and stonechats singing nicely over on Yateley Common South as well as meadow pipits in song flight. A skylark was hopping about the paths and a fair number of linnets were about. Also some siskins in the pines along the tarmac road. Must be spring already.

Yateley Common North (for a change) came up withvery little. Apart from woodpigeon, the only birds I saw were mallard and Dartford warbler. Heard a few goldcrests, but that was it. A few birds calling, but not showing (blue, long-tailed and great tits, robins, blackbirds). As ever, the paths...

You're right - buzzards do seem more common than a few years ago. Might go out goldcrest hunting this afternoon on Yateley Common. Might be lucky and see a firecrest...

Woo hoo! Finally got some goldcrest shots http://www.tonykeenebirds.co.uk/bbirds/goldcrest.html Ok, they're a bit ropey, but they were into the sun and it was moving a lot... No sign of either the yellow-browed warbler or the chiffchaffs on the Blackwater at Hawley Meadows today, but there were...

Reed buntings still on Yateley Common South in the same tree as last time. I do believe they might be getting more used to people walking past them. Maybe even a shot before we're off...?

I'm thinking of conning Dad into driving me down there... 10 or 15 feet is perfect. Which bit is the 'visitor's centre' - is it the notice board near the car park at the Portsmouth end? I dunno if you've moseyed down around it, but has there ever been anything other than BHGs and herrings at...

Jason, do you know if the brents are about on Southsea Common, and if so, are they very approachable? I wouldn't mind getting a few shots from a bit closer than 60 yards... On that note - anything good going at Farlington lately?
