  1. Tri-Counties Birder

    Hants, Berks and Surrey Borders

I saw at least three birds from Tice's this afternoon (one over hogs back, two in distance towards Farnham).
  2. Tri-Counties Birder

    Hants, Berks and Surrey Borders

Visited twice this morning (c9:30 + c12:30), and nothing!

Yes, very likely to be breeding. Its quite a frequent species in the Haslemere area, particularly this year, where I seem to be bumping into them all over the place, so it doesn't surprise me that they are 'overspilling' into other areas.

A few hirundines at Frensham just now. 5+ Sand Martins at the Little Pond moved on quickly, and another 3 at the Great pond, with a very surprise House Martin in tow.

I popped to Tice's again this afternoon, and it was nice to meet Rich Horton for the first time, although he informed me that the LRPs had gone missing. I spent some time searching, to no avail. Nothing else different to yesterday either. Wish i'd known about the Waxwings!
  6. Tri-Counties Birder

Had a quick look at Frensham and then Tice's this afternoon, but no migrants as yet. Best at Frensham was 6 Goosander flying towards the stock pond (or whatever you call it). At Tice's there were 3 Roe Deer on the far bank, and I had two (I think female) Sparrowhawk having a territorial...

Had a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker drumming at Tilford this morning, on the other side of the river, in Poplars. Also a few Siskin and Redpoll flying around, and one Brambling heard. At least 3, maybe 4 Great Spots competitively drumming in the area too. Also, a Little Egret flew onto the...

Someone has just told me that they had 2 Black-throated Diver on The Tarn of Puttenham Common last Saturday. I have tried to persuade them that that it is very unlikely, but they seem pretty convinced. They've described two black-and-white birds with black throats diving for long periods, and...
  9. Tri-Counties Birder

    Hants, Berks and Surrey Borders

We didn't see any other birders (we were there till 16:30)! Maybe we were in the wrong place. I thought I heard a Raven at one point, but dismissed it.

Spent a day birding the area with Matt today. Tice's first was absolutley full of Gulls, but I only managed to find a definite Yellow-legged Gull before Matt got there. Otherwise, we accidentally flushed the Little Egret from the Blackwater, and we had a great encounter with a Goldcrest...

Matt, Both Yellow-leg and Caspian calls are virtually indestinct from Herring calls. I would suggest it was either just one of the many Herring vocalisations that you were unfamiliar with, or maybe a Common or Lesser/Great Black-backed (the former a 'mewing', the latter a gruff low-pitched...
  12. Tri-Counties Birder

    Hants, Berks and Surrey Borders

I would have thought they are still around, Matt. There was still plenty of berries left on those bushes when I left, and I also noticed a couple of very berry-filled trees along the next road along Boxalls lane to the east (Highfield Avenue). They were also reported from the Holder Road area...

I saw the Eggars Hill birds today too. There were attempting to feed on the two white Rowans outside 23/24/25 Eggars Hill, but flushed everytime a car went by (which was often!). I attempted to get some shots, but they were never on the bush I was focusing on! In fact, once they came and...

Just to clarify Bill, there is no news either way yet. So, they could very well still be there.
  15. Tri-Counties Birder

Not round these parts I'm afraid Matt, but Between Walton-on-Thames and East Molesley. A special Permit is required however. Sean

Any decent berry bushes within the Tice's 'recording area'? Keep your eyes on them!
  17. Tri-Counties Birder

At Frensham today: 3+ Hobby over Little Pond several Redstart several Reed Warblers but best of all, a fledgling Crossbill being fed by dad. Then to Tice's Meadow, but only Common Sand and 5 Common Tern of interest.

One has been seen on occasion at Thursley. I think there are small numbers still at Hindhead, Frensham, and Hankley commons.
