I can certainly confirm today's two birds - just seen them. Incredible!

As alluded to in the previous post, lots of Shags have been darvic ringed further north over the last few years and this has yielded a lot of interesting information. It would be really interesting to know where some of these new Norfolk shags have come from, so please look out for darvic rings...

Piptoporus betulinus - Birch Polypore Taking son to rugby match in Holt tomorrow morning, so hope the horny Redpoll reappears by lunchtime... Anyone know details about the "recent" Sibe Stonechat at Horsey, rept on Birdguides tonight? Free on Monday to go and have a look, but would be good to...

Ah, OK then. I later wondered if it might simply be the spring tides forcing them off Scroby, but maybe not. Clearly finding Horsey to their liking. Cheers Andy

    Norfolk birding

On a different matter, I heard from a friend of a friend, that apparently there were "about a thousand" seals hauled up on the beach at Horsey. This seems highly odd for early April? Anyone else noticed these? Perhaps displaced from Scroby Sands off Yarmouth? I don't know if Greys (presumably)...

Hi all There's only days left now to book your place at the upcoming BTO Norfolk Birdwatchers Conference at East Tuddenham on Saturday 14th April. We've got a "fantastic line-up of guest speakers" (*) talking on all aspects of birdwatching from nest recording to ringing, patch birding to...

Just a quickie - my earliest Willow Warbler (by four days) singing behind the fen hide at Strumpshaw Fen yesterday morning. Nice to see the Glossy Ibi too ("ibises" as the plural always sounds wrong to me). Cheers Andy

Hi John Try Eristalis tenax, often known as the drone-fly due to its similarity to a bee. Usually one of the first hovers out in the spring. A good feature to look out for, for the "tribe" Eristalini, is the vein in the wing that has the u-shape in it. Cheers Andy

Have seen this (or very similar) individual here at Strumpshaw before; in fact, checking my BirdTrack records now, I see it was on 11/4/2010 and 22/04/2011. Surely must the same beast - I agree, it certainly makes you take a second look! Andy

Have got a good little booklet on Shieldbugs & Squashbugs of the British Isles (Evans & Edmondson 2005); apparently Gorse Shieldbug can be found from July to early June, so I guess that it's to be expected on mild days in the winter. Nice beastie though. Andy

Hah, I am in the office all week, just able to get out before work and at lunch. The whole of Thetford Forest has crossbills to be honest. Just find a car parking spot and have a wander! Don't know if there are any stands of larches anywhere near Lynford that might be a focus for the species...

    Norfolk birding

And another walk round Lynford this morning also failed to pay off. That'll do for me, unless someone else relocates it! Obviously, it's a big forest and there's probably every chance it's still around somewhere, but based on the evidence of this week, it just doesn't seem particularly closely...

I had a look for the Two-barred at lunchtime yesterday (Wed) in the rain, without luck. Despite the weather, crossbills were fairly active with about 10 in total but all looked and sounded the same to me. Also 18 Hawfinches in the paddock. Didn't manage to make it out there today, tomorrow...

    Norfolk birding

Actually, according to BirdGuides, the Kent bird was seen 2 days ago but not since. If it is the same bird, then should be easy to check as it's a pretty distinctive plumage - see http://213.253.6.41/iris/pictures.asp?v=1&f=338939. Very pale underbody. Looks like the bird in Lincs last year...

Of course, one might cheekily also ask what the point of people calling themselves pseudonyms in public forums, instead of real names, if the majority of people do not understand who they are... [I think that's been done before though, and I'm only being mischievous - apologies in advance!]...

And I might be... my 8th top target according to BUBO Listing. Never got round to trying for one before, but about time I knocked this one on the head really. 2BXB is just a lazy spur-of-the-moment abbreviation. Actually, it appears that the official BTO 2-letter code for Two-barred Crossbill...

No sign of the 2BXB during a chilly hour and half this morning. It's a big wood though. I suspect I'll be back again as opportunity allows Andy

Thanks John. Sorry, not really clear from your message, but is this a picture of the bird today at Lynford? Taken by you? Sorry, just not clear. Yes, BirdGuides is having a bit of trouble this weekend with some changes of their server provider I think. Cheers Andy

Very early returner I'm sure Ben - there's been a few other recent reports elsewhere in the country. Ospreys are regularly seen fairly early in March, although February does seem pretty extreme! Doubt there's an escape risk - I don't think I've ever heard of these being kept in captivity (he...

Sorry, haven't been paying much attention to the forum recently. Yes, if you send records of anything to BirdGuides then they will automatically feed through to BirdTrack, and we can then make use of them at BTO. We're also working on some more direct "news" type functions within BirdTrack...

Hi all Anyone got any photos of the Whitlingham Ferruginous? I saw it today whilst doing my (week-late) WeBS count and as I was trying to count the other ducks present I didn't give it the attention it deserved. However, to me the head shape didn't seem to ring quite true? Seemed too peaked on...

Hi all I have a friend who's been planning a trip down for the Western Sand for ages, and has finally got an opportunity for tomorrow. So of course, sod's law comes into play and it hasn't been reported on BirdGuides today. Anyone got any local knowledge, positive or negative, that can aid him...
