If you look at regions other than CR (your example), it seems to be only the latest ten reports, with "latest" defined by start date (e.g., Trip Reports - Japan - eBird).     The only substantive effect, IMO, is to the hotspot pages, in which the new layout seems more suited to attracting beginners than to facilitating use by experienced users.
