AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

The „process“ means: observing bird, pressing button halfway to start ID, waiting for display segments to become bold: if bird is well visible (not partially hidden by foreground branches etc) and not too far away for the Visio, from about 1.5 to 5 secs** (if bird is out of reach, segments will...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

Some more samples taken with the (quote from another post) "expensive proof of concept/protoype that will either be a one off or be technologically obsolete in a year or two (with zero resale value in either case)" (unquote) - some members here are really fast with their opinions :oops...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

As far as I can tell, when using the Merlin app with the smartphone in flight mode the results are the same as when network connection is active.

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

Will have to try out when back home (currently traveling for a few days).

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

And you should see how badly the Visio camera fares against really good cameras like e.g. my Leica Q2 (which cost about the same as the Visio:(). So don‘t count on the Visio if you are an avid wildlife or landscape photographer looking for a good camera. The Visio is more for people who have...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

As indicated in earlier posts, not only does the Visio not feature a screw hole for mounting on a tripod, its body shape makes mounts of the Berlebach type uncomfortable to use. My solution for stationary birding situations, where carrying a tripod may make sense: the Swarovski binocular tripod...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

My experience: the great majority of detection failures in the Visio are of the „no identifiable bird“ type (reasons mostly: bird too far away, hidden in branches, bird against bright background). Wrong species IDs occur only occasionally, similar to the way it happens in the Merlin app.

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

More samples: great spotted woodpecker, easily and correctly identified twice in a row, distance 42 yards (laser measured) white stork, correctly identified at second attempt (first attempt: "no identifiable bird"), distance 80-100 yeards (estimate) common kestrel, correctly identified...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

    What‘s the question exactly?

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

This is in line with my experience (see my earlier posts about „realistic expectations“). Swarovski indicates in their instructions that for successful identifications, the bird has to more or less fill the red circle (two different choosable sizes) visible in the display. Small birds at more...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

After some more days getting used to the Visio , I think the current focal length satisfies up to a limited distance, but something like 400mm equiv would be welcome as it would allow to do IDs at greater distances than is the case today. Now, even well visible birds are often too far away and...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

.... and I read you therefore saying that the Visio CAN replace digiscoping - the difficulties of which (as you also said) always gave me more frustration than satisfaction. Sorry for the confusion caused by my original post - I still find objects in the image of the bino much bigger than those...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

So ... In fact, this exercise seems to fully contradict my earlier statement about the size of the images taken by the camera of the Visio. Looking through the bino made me believe to see things much bigger then when they came out of the camera. Interesting !! Tell me what your conclusion is...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

Correct. I think it's no different than when you are out taking pics with your camera or digiscoping. When these little rascals jump from branch to branch, leaving me one second or less to take a pic, I often press the button on the off-chance and hope I get something usable. In that case, more...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

You mean a photo with smartphone taken through the Visio eyepiece compared with a photo of the Visio camera? Will do. But a big CAVEAT, upon further reflection about my rash statement „The camera does not “see” things as large as you see them in the binocular“: In fact, I don‘t really know...

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

Isn’t the human brain an exceptionally wonderful device? Imagine: many adults can sometimes identify a bird even if it is hidden behind branches so that only a small part of the bird’s body is well visible. Trying to mimic that with electronic algorithms is extremely demanding, as any...
