    I've seen them on Scilly in October a couple of times in the past but who knows if those were British Corncrakes or from further East. They are never easy on migration! John

    Or the Farnes, or Bempton (no boat required at the latter) or Shetland, or Orkney..... would there still be a chance of Corncrake on the Western Isles that late? John

    I would also argue there's nothing wrong with August for birding in Britain. Breeding is more or less finished so there are lots of naive juvenile birds of ordinary British species about to give good viewing opportunities. Yes British birders switch attention but we are all used to our own...
