    First Butterflies 2024

Winter egg hunts are finding them all over the place. There has been a real increase in sightings over the last few years. Wonder if it's a climatic response as Blackthorn is as common as muck, so food plant was never an issue, though does need sensitive management regarding hedge management.

I was sitting on the top deck of a bus which was stationary at a stop when 2 battling Red Admirals flew across the road in front of me, possibly coming from the nearby cemetery across the road.

    First Butterflies 2024

Almost certainly hibernators. When they emerge July/August they usually feed up for a few days & usually go into dormancy, so thus many hibernating species often look fresh when they emerge in the spring (or late winter here).

    First Butterflies 2024

After an arctic blast last week with much ice & heavy frost, it's turned much milder since the weekend, if stormy at times. Slightly surprised to see 2 Red Admirals about in Kew Gardens today, even though I know they can be seen in any month.
