    Old v's new?

Thanks Joachim. Yep I was wondering if I should extend the middle one to be more stable rather than the lowest section. Good point. Mine has an aiming device, and it does help! I certainly am enjoying the view. Best wishes Q

    Old v's new?

My backpack is a Cley Spy Mule, and has a removable 'camera pouch' that has a waterbottle pouch. It works well and saves carrying yet another pouch/bag etc.

    Old v's new?

Update no. 2: It's been a while since I asked my original question about old v's new scopes. In that time I've used a friend's Swarovski ATS 80mm with a 25x50 eyepiece on the wetland I frequent and noted the ability to identify birds at a distance with it's zoom, seen a couple of Vortex and a...

    Old v's new?

Update: As mentioned at the start, I've an Optolyth TGB80 with x20w eyepiece in a case with a strap and a Manfrotto 290B tripod with a 200 head that has a quick release plate. I've started to use it properly for the first time walking around a local wetland. Originally I'd release the 'scope...

OK thank you for the thoughts, I'll investigate the x20 eyepiece too

    Old v's new?

Thank you both for your thoughts, I'd no idea of how the design changed. I'll check out the security strap too.

    Old v's new?

Thanks Peter. I'm rapidly coming round to the idea of having a look around at kit, especially with a field day from In Focus close by in early March. Maybe seek out shops locally if I get impatient. I've generally used the scope and bins without wearing my glasses but I've just realised I'm...

    Old v's new?

Thanks Peter. I think I need to investigate new eyepieces for this function alone, or I'm either walking somewhat blurry eyed, or juggling glasses and bins. Hmmmm more food for thought!

    Old v's new?

I've just returned from a quick amble testing some new mitts in the cold wind and took along the 'scope and tripod. I've only recently realised my vision outside has been a bit blurry and it is resolved by wearing my 'distance' glasses normally kept in the car for driving. Using my Zeiss bins...

    Old v's new?

Thank you Jorge for taking the time to reply. You've proved a new eyepiece is compatible with my telescope, that's good to know. I now need to try and view some of these eyepieces and find out exactly how they offer improvement over my standard Optolyth one. Many thanks Q

    Old v's new?

Thanks 4John, It is good to get to know how people manage their kit. From my trips so far, I don't need an immediate response, so can be casual about setting up. I just need to make sure it all doesn't crash into one another or strangle me in the process! I'm scanning using binoculars, see...

    Old v's new?

Hi, Thank you for the reassurances. It's good to get an opinion of the head, and that the qr is sound. I have paracord and can 'invent' a clip safety line. I like adapting things. I think that's the thing that I haven't really got sorted yet - how to carry the kit, plus bins to enable me to...

    Old v's new?

Hiya, just been looking at SW Optics website. Are they always open? It just implies you have to book an appointment...

    Old v's new?

Ah messages coming as I type! I'd heard there was somewhere in Torbay... thanks for the heads-up. I remember Infocus from ages ago, will keep an eye on their events. Thanks for the comments.

    Old v's new?

Hi Daniel, Thanks for replying. I wasn't aware I could swap eyepieces across brands, that might be worth a look. Not sure where to go down here. I previously managed to get to Focus Optics when up on family business but thyve gone. It was a great place to try kit...

    Old v's new?

Hi 4John, Thanks for replying. being nosy I've had a quick look at larger scopes on the web and as you say, I think the weight is similar to mine. I'm not a 'travelling birder' at the moment, simply needing to do a job. As you say, I might as well stick with what I've got, I just need to learn...

    Old v's new?

Hi Gang, Some questions from an old 'newbie' regarding telescopes, tripods and how the equipment has changed since buying my kit. I bought a telescope and tripod ~ 30 years ago and only used it once or twice before other family commitments stopped me in my tracks, though have kept up using my...
