I failed to make it to Leuk or Kaltbrunnerried with the rain and life both conspiring against me. I’ll be back in July, maybe then if it’s not raining 🤪

I’ve tried before in Vals. I plan to try in Leuk this time :)

I hope to get out again starting next week, my mission this summer is to finally see a Rock Partridge. I’d also like to get to Kaltbrunnerried soon and see if I can find the Icterine Warblers there, I’ve only ever seen a handful of them and always migrants or while looking for other birds so...

I sometimes hear Orioles early in the summer on Kaferberg and Honggerberg but the only “reliable” place I know for them is in the forests near Bachenbulacheralmend at the N end of the Flughafen ZRH runways / the plane viewing area/cafe. For Nightingales, the forest patches and hedgerows at...

A Relict Gull or Sooty Gull I could get excited about. Laughing Gull…. Hrm… 🤣

Apparently both species were present Saturday but the SC not refound after. And yeah, the weather is a rude home coming 🤣

Collared Fly is a nice one! I would probably make an effort for that as it’s an easy bike ride but I doubt it’ll be there until I’m home in a few days. Meanwhile preparing to come home to winter again…

Apparently at least one Savi's Warbler @ Katzensee over the weekend, and a good mix of migrants in general. We spent the weekend cycling, perhaps missed the best weekend for local birding but c'est la vie :)

Two Northern Wheatears locally this morning were my first of the year. Otherwise I've not been able to kick up many migrants the past couple days.

I greatly appreciate the availability of all the transit and all the lifts / gondolas, even if it is a bit of a pain to figure it out most of the time. We don't plan ahead much. I would say about 2/3 - 3/4 of the time that we have an idea to do something we never progress far enough in the...

My impression (though I'm far from expert on Swiss birding) is the sites in the pre-alps that are actually closer to Zürich tend to have some of the montane species (Grouse, Three-toed WP, Pygmy-Owl, though generally not Citril or Snow Finch or Rock Partridge) but the birds are usually hard...

Yeah I would far, far rather take the train through the Gotthardtunnel than a car. Dartford Warbler is a great bird, love all the Mediterranean Sylvias  Perhaps my favorite birds in Europe.

I’ve only managed to see Penduline Tits twice, still looking for a really nice encounter and more time with more cooperative birds. Nice one you had there!

    Switzerland 2024

The nice weather Monday and Tuesday was tremendous but I spent it biking instead of birding ;) Did put some effort in a couple times in the past week hoping for Penduline Tits at Chatzensee or Büsisee but without any luck. We are in Italy this weekend mostly eating and relaxing, then I’ll have...

Yeah I saw that and given that ornitho.ch claimed to have "switched to IOC" taxonomy at the end of last year, thought it was interesting that they call it Baltic Gull directly instead of something like Lesser Black-backed Gull (Baltic) or Lesser Black-backed Gull (fuscus). While there are a...

And I just heard the first Alpine Swifts of the year. Despite it just having snowed overnight spring is starting to show itself!

And a couple of Bramblings today so they're still around. I'm still (slowly) getting a handle on when birds come and go. IE, Serins and Black Redstarts seem to have arrived en masse the past few days...

I thought I saw a a Brambling yesterday but couldn’t confirm it. I guess getting down to the last few birds streaming north now.

I'm not so great at Palearctic gulls but agree it's 1st winter. I would presume it is Yellow-legged but am not very experienced with Herring so shrug. Nothing about it points me at, say, LBB or Caspian. Now of course the beautiful weather from this week looks to be packing it in for the...

    Switzerland 2024

For some birds like breeding raptors or owls, I think keeping things secret really does help. For the Capercaillie, I think it probably helps, though there's already a lot of disturbance from non-birders in the zones I know to look for them. But overall I basically agree with you Frank. I don't...

    Switzerland 2024

So perhaps I shouldn't have said it's "f*cking lame" ;) But these data restrictions are really inconsistently applied and the sort of combo of factors in CH combine to make it one of the least friendly countries to visiting birders and to new birders, it seems to me. I'm fortunate to have...

    Switzerland 2024

With Capercaillie and for instance Tengmalm's Owl I definitely understand. Corn Crake as well. But there are many species marked as sensitive in eBird that are not in neighboring countries - Eu Pygmy-Owl, Rock Partridge, Hazel Grouse, I think Black Grouse maybe too, White-backed Woodpecker I...

    Switzerland 2024

Yesterday there were maybe 25-30 birders present at peak. The area to see the bird is from a paved path and the Lapwings were never closer than maybe 150m or so. Didn’t seem like any disturbance or any issues there.

Got info directly from a couple friends. I can at last finally use the Swiss RBA application - previously there were geo limitations and as my Apple account is using a non Swiss credit card the application was unavailable to me. However in this case I just got a couple WhatsApp's right away...
