Results are in - the Porth Hellick (Isles of Scilly) flycatcher found a couple of weeks ago was a nominate spotted flycatcher (M. striata), confirmed by Prof. Martin Collinson through DNA obtained from a faecal sample. An educational bird nonetheless for those that saw it. The bird certainly...

Thank you for the excellent photos. Certainly a head scratcher for those in the field. Think some leading Dutch Birders are involved now helping with the ID. It’s been quite amusing on the Scilly Birders WhatsApp Group as they have photographs with ‘VAR’ lines on trying to assess the projection...

Hi Mike, Both Bird Guides and Rare Bird Alert are putting it out as a possible Med Flycatcher. Even better a poo sample was obtained earlier this am so we will now know one way or the other! Regards Mike

This bird has just turned up on the Isles of Scilly. Debate going on as to whether a spot or med flycatcher. Picture courtesy of Tim Jones. Any thoughts from the resident experts on Med Fly either way gratefully accepted. More pics available. Ought to add that the IOS has a really good w/e just...

Another interesting day in the field starting at Talaia d’Albercutx. A Cinnerous Vulture flew close and below me giving outstanding views. 2 Balearic Warblers were seen along with numerous Black Redstarts, Robins and surprisingly quite a few Song Thrushes. My long shot hope of finding an Alpine...

Interesting day in north Majorca. Started at the S’Albuferata seeing the Bluethroat in a bush beneath the tower platform. Fairly quiet from the hide though. Moved on to the S’Albufera. Really quiet people wise but great place to be in the calm (almost windless!) and sunny weather. Drake garganey...

Managed to drive directly from the airport to Bassa de can Guidet. (Thanks Stew). BN grebes were showing well but distantly. I cannot confirm or deny the number of 25 seen a couple of days ago! What with peering thru gaps in the fence line trees, the very strong wind and the birds actively...

Thank you Stew for the info. Reservoir looks easy to find on Google Maps but close access to the water body itself is clearly another matter then!! Your directions will be invaluable. 🤞for the BNGs. My first Feb. (and winter) visit so quite a few Majorcan ✅ hopefully await!

Hi, I am ok in finding the site but wasn’t sure on getting access, ie the best place to watch the birds from and whether there are any hides present. Would it be the west, north or east side to view from? Thanks Mike

    Mallorca 2024

Hi, Hope someone can help. Starting a short holiday this Saturday on the island. Would like to call in (as I head to the north of the island) to Bassa de Can Guidet to view the BN grebes. It is a site I have never visited and note from Google Maps that there are roads running round the west...
