    Mallorca 2024

I popped out for my regular Sunday pre-breakfast walk at the Salobrar – I am beginning to think I could write my check list of species before I go out, it would save time! Although there were no great surprises, I was treated among other things to a spectacular flight of flamingos, common and...

Lesser Kestrel yes, but only one definite, no red footed falcons that I could see. But who knows what tomorrow will bring? ;):)

When my wife said yesterday morning, "How about a trip to the plains near Maria? You could do some birding and I could paint...", it would have been rude to say no. And I am very glad I didn't. As soon as we got out of the car, I saw a distant bird on the power lines. My scope revealed it was a...

Hi Mike, yes I do photograph in RAW but I convert to JPEG when I post as well as shrinking the size of the files. Some pictures loaded easily - my birds from yesterday - but I couldn't upload images of the moth. Very puzzling. And thanks for the ID!

Try again with the insects. Here is the original text: By the way and changing the subject, can someone please give me an ID for this moth I saw in my garden yesterday? Many thanks in advance; tips on literature re moths/butterflies/dragonflies will also be very welcome. I already have StewB's...

    Mallorca 2024

Many thanks Many thanks Mike for the Son Real recommendation – I made the trek up north this morning after some uneventful birding in the south since I got back to the island last week and I was not disappointed. At the hide, there was a constant stream of birds, mostly common (goldfinch...

    Mallorca 2024

Just a quick post before family commitments mean we have to leave for a while again – I had a quick trip to the Salobrar before breakfast again, all very pleasant but very quiet. The only bird of any interest to me was the wood sandpiper, a year tick for me to nicely round off this visit. And I...

I made it to S'Albufera today after a quick stop at the Depuradora and, in a word, had a lovely day out. It started out with three hoopoes flying up in front of the car on the way to the Dep, a nightingale singing as we strolled down to the platform, followed by plenty of decent birds to watch...

Thank you Kevin and Mike – I was hoping someone would say pratincole. The more I looked the more sure I became. It is really good to have confirmation from two others. Thanks again – I just wish I had seen it from the front!!!

    Mallorca 2024

I went for a quick walk at shortly after sunrise at the Salobrar yesterday and while I didn't recognise anything out of the ordinary there, I did spot two birds disappearing into the distance and was too slow to get a decent photo. However, this photo is all I have, clearly not a small bird and...

    Mallorca 2024

This morning at the Cape: I arrived very early hoping to photograph a stunning sunrise, or at least a sunrise, but the golden orb didn't put in an appearance till about 9.30 as a white blob to be seen through the mist. And it was in the wrong place. Not where I expected at all. (I know, there's...

    Mallorca 2024

I have just spent a pleasurable few hours photographing flying creatures in our garden, then trying to identify them. My knowledge of butterflies was in a state of perfect and comprehensive ignorance but now thanks to Mike Swiss's links to info material I have been able to recognise the ones I...

    Mallorca 2024

Back again after two months away and where was I this morning? Salobrar de Campos of course, just after sunrise, the expected warming sunshine not really materialising at about 8 or 9°C. But there was life there – the piping of the waders and chatter of flamingos and shelduck, lower water levels...

I love seeing the swifts come whizzing in over the Salobrar but I won't be there on the island until early April. So good luck down there in your wellies, but be careful, it gets slippery!:ROFLMAO:

Thank you Ian – I kind of wanted it to be a scaup as well, but I am reliably informed by Mike that both are quite rare here, and either one is a year tick for me anyway, so I guess I can't lose. Comforting for me to know that there was a certain amount of doubt among experts though! :-)

    Mallorca 2024

Just wondering a bit about our mystery duck from yesterday: I have just pinched these photos from Merlin for comparison. That’s tufted duck, scaup and “our” duck in that order. Ours doesn’t have any sign of a tuft and the headshape resembles the scaup more for me. I would welcome any comments...

    Mallorca 2024

Today MikeM and I ventured north to S'Albufera to see if I could find some birds absent in my neck of the woods. Long story short and despite the almost complete absence of waders it was a terrific day out. My year ticks kept on clicking up (easy when you start from a low base), and we were...
