    Garden / Yard List 2024

Spring essentially over, migration basically over, summer temperatures too, topping near 30 C today and forecast to stay near this for the foreseeable future. The full suite of likely migrants has now arrived, one River Warbler trilling off yonder (could still get Spotted Flycatcher, but...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Varies year to year for me, sometimes only one or can even be none, occasionally three to four singing birds, generally in willow scrub in damper areas. This year's bird, still singing this morning, is right by my house - a clump of willows and shrubs in a damp area surrounded otherwise by open...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Rather happier here - my pair of Cranes brought their newly hatched chicks into the meadow, two nice orangy headed things strutting through the long grass. Also my first Marsh Warbler of the season singing by the house. 130. Marsh Warbler

Top news on my plot ... successful hatching of Whooper Swan cygnets, at least two fluffy bundles on the water yesterday (second adult still sitting on the nest, maybe more cygnets). Second breeding ever - this pair bred three years ago and summered both years since, but didn't seem to breed or...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Continuing arrival of breeding migrants, day started and ended with a Hobby hunting and catching dragonflies around the house, but also my first Common Rosefinches of the season, two males in song, and my first Red-backed Shrike of the season, a nice male. Corncrakes calling in the meadow, but...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Another couple today - Black Kite and the first Swifts. Still a trickle of waders passing through too, four Wood Sandpipers, a Greenshank and a Ruff today, plus two male Garganey. Also appear to have a pair of Common Redshanks breeding - if so, this will be a new breeding species. 122. Black...

Far-East Russia wouldn't be a no no for me, but there would definitely be some questions when I returned to Lithuania :) But I was in Taiwan 👍 Have now flown down to Singapore. Should be a nice jump in the garden tally when I return

I've been 10000 km away from my land for the last three weeks, but Wild Boars just triggered my trail cam ...and very clear Great Reed Warbler singing in the background. That's one up for the year ... not bad from a 10 k km distance :)

And further - in some parts of the world, it also issues warning messages that its databases are not so complete and identifications can be wrong.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

It does okay on Chaffinches, but a variety of others it mixes, including calling my Whooper Swans as Cranes last week. It is definitely affected by locations as it will also label calls as rare/semi-rare for your location/date...and +/- it seems to get that correct. Also, if you turn off your...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Maybe it depends where ... repeatedly testing it on my land, I find it frequently misidentifies about 20-30% of calls, and further simply misses another 10-30% (usually far away birds than I can still do, but it's not picking up, but occasionally closer ones too).

    Garden / Yard List 2024

South meets north, in decidedly cold weather, first incoming Lesser Whitethroat and, rather more surprisingly, a very late Waxwing late afternoon - very rare do I see these so late in the spring. Greenfinches in good numbers and Hawfinches continue at the bird table ...and, totally weird, one...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Good wader period, after the Black-tailed Godwits and Common Redshank yesterday and Wood Sandpipers and Greenshank today, a male Ruff on the pool this evening. Also two Snipe, plus Lapwings as always. 106. Ruff

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Well, them there poor little Wrynecks ...two days after mine arrived, snow here too! Did hear one calling a little later though. Snow early morning, fair middle day, heavy rain/bright spells now - a right mish mash. Some good birds nonetheless ...two Wood Sandpipers on the house pool early...

I can happily confirm he is alive and well, but has relocated to warmer climes up north ... singing Wryneck this morning 👍 And then, taking me to 100, a Swallow through late afternoon. 99. Wryneck 100. Swallow

    Garden / Yard List 2024

By day's end, Greenfinches at the bird table were numbering over 40, a right squabbling racket of birds. Two very nice Hawfinches with them First Lesser Spotted Eagle of the spring late afternoon. 98. Lesser Spotted Eagle

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Nice action at my bird table - a growing fkock of Greenfinches now in excess of 30, also bringing in a beefy Hawfinch to dominate the table this morning Rain setting in, but just before one signing Blackcap newly arrived ... 97. Blackcap

Marsh Sandpipers continuing into their third day, the bevy of ducks too, but little migration today - one new migrant arriving, the first Whinchat. 96. Whinchat

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Marsh Sandpipers were still present till early afternoon and the full suite of ducks - Wigeon, Teal, Shoveller, Mallard, Goldeneye and Goosander, but perhaps the most impressive birds today were a flyover flock of migrating Cormorants Initially thought they were incoming geese, but instead it...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Very nice period now - new birds every day. Pool by the house is pretty magic at present - Wigeon and Shoveler still present, joined today by a pair of Garganey (and Mallard and Goldeneye), but even better a good bunch of waders, Lapwings and Green Sandpipers as usual, but also one Black-tailed...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Virtually every new species arriving this spring is breaking my earliest ever arrival date - two Tree Pipits today, two weeks early. Also one Osprey breaking my earliest ever and a Kestrel, a rare passage bird for me, but also earlier than I have seen before. Two other new for the year too...
