January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

I was at one of the few sites that the RSPB have always been happy to publicise - the car park at Broadsands beach, Paignton. They get fed in winter and come in from breeding sites elsewhere.

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

6 final additions for Australia, of which all but one were new for the world list. I think it's probably time to close the list at this point. Total: 705 Of which: Europe 180 (UK 167, rest of Europe 78) North America 270 (USA 178, Mexico 120, Barbados 20) Australasia 141 (Australia 117, New...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

We already had Least Flycatcher from the US, but the 4 Aussies are all new. Total: 700 Of which: Europe 180 (UK 167, rest of Europe 78) North America 270 (USA 178, Mexico 120, Barbados 20) Australasia 135 (Australia 111, New Zealand 26) Africa 107 East Asia 51 South-west Asia 5

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Yes, the Red-breasted is still in the UK total. I don't have strong views about the Cackling Goose and have no problem putting it back in the UK total if people disagree with the person who queried it. It won't affect the global total because we have it on the list from the US.
  5. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

We have a worldwide total, provisional as I'm sure there are duplicates where someone's used a non-IOC name that I've failed to spot. Also there's still time over the next day or two for anyone to add something they saw on the first. Total: 696 Of which: Europe 180 (UK 167, rest of Europe 78)...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

After a bit of tidying up of my earlier numbers, I think we now have a combined 131 for Australia and New Zealand, of which 107 Australian and 26 NZ, with 2 on both lists. Too early to see what this does for the global total, but I don't think it will surprise anyone that Eurasian Blackbird had...
  7. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Blackcap - one on a feeder in a random garden in Topsham. I hadn't noticed we were missing that one. UK 166, Europe 179. Or one less for each if we drop the Cackling Goose. We do have that species for the world list - it was seen in the US.
  8. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

"Addick" is a non-gendered term, there being no traditional need to distinguish between male and female haddocks (it's a football club nickname). So no offence would be taken either way ("he" is correct but I'll answer to "they" or "oi you" quite happily).
  9. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Running totals by continent (ish): North America 270, Europe 177, Africa 107, Australia 105, East Asia 51, South-west Asia 5. As yet I have no real idea how much overlap there is between these lists, other than that it's pretty extensive.
  10. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Jos' list takes North America to a combined 270, of which USA 177, Mexico 119 and Barbados 20. Jos you have Least Sandpiper on your list twice. Canvasback, Green Woodpecker and Green Sandpiper take the UK to 164 and Europe to 177. A world total will need to wait until later in the day - work...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Common Kingfisher, Baikal Teal, Eurasian Woodcock and Kentish Plover add 4 to the UK (161) and 3 to Europe overall (175). Thanks Julian.

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

I haven't got to Jos or Julian's posts yet, those will hopefully get included while I'm on a train tomorrow morning. Up to the end of the previous page, I currently make it 172 for Europe, of which 157 UK and 78 rest of Europe. North America 190 of which USA 177, but a large proportion of the...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

The North America list stands at 191, combining USA, Barbados and one teaser from Yucatan. I've added a North America tab to the spreadsheet.

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

No, sorry. Unless you can persuade the person who saw it to sign up for Birdforum and post it... All noted, thanks. I also see that I somehow missed that we'd had Lesser Scaup reported - sorry Jon!

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

The UK list on the spreadsheet is now up to date (151 species). Towards the end I stopped updating the Europe and World totals so I could skip ahead and have a list to share. The US list (178 species) is already on the spreadsheet (thanks @qwerty5 ) and the "rest of Europe" list will follow...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

One of the things that always fascinates me about this game is the places things turn up. Our first Eurasian Coot was in Australia, our first Eurasian Tree Sparrow in Hong Kong, and our first Yellow-browed Warbler was in the UK.
  19. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

I'm currently slogging through the spreadsheet, working my way through page 3 at the moment. There's still time to add more contributions as long as you saw or heard the bird on the 1st - no cheating by adding an owl you heard at 1am on the 2nd! Another way people can help is to scan through...
  20. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

It's much easier for me if you make a new post with the additional species. Once I start to get the spreadsheet caught up, which hasn't started yet, there's a risk I may miss something that's added to a post I've already looked at.
  21. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Ended with 54, with some really common species missing. It was going so well until the rain came... I think Fulmer, Guillemot and Razorbill are the only ones I saw that haven't been reported for the UK yet. If you're in Europe, please don't be put off posting something that has been seen in...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Called in at Berry Head. Chiffchaff in the bushes at the top of the cliff, and Harbour Porpoise in the sea below. I know that last one doesn't count for the total, but when you live about as far from the sea as you can get in the UK any cetacean is a highlight.
  23. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Yellow browed Warbler. Also a Song Thrush singing its heart out. Edit: And two Great Northern Divers. What a start to the year.
  24. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Cirl Bunting duly ticked off for the UK. Also Goldfinch Greenfinch and lots of House Sparrows.
  25. Swindon Addick

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2024 edition)

Like last year I've made a blank spreadsheet which once it gets caught up with what's posted here can help work out if things you've seen have already been reported. Reminder please post your sightings on this thread rather than direct to the spreadsheet - it helps to have everything in one...
