Where is this way to submit thoughts? I must have missed it above.

Most sources consider south Florida to be Neotropical.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I have no doubt established serious birders will have no trouble learning them - many already know them. But it is a massive barrier for the more casual folks.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Making it basically required to learn the bionomial names would be a huge barrier for birding. I agree that an increase in use of these name will be an inevitable outcome of changing a large amount of bird names. But ultimately that's a bad thing. It makes birding less accessible.

It's also interesting they say Long-tailed Duck was a name change relating to a slur in the name, when the official reason for the change was to align with the name used in other regions.

I understand and agree with the reasons for changing Bachman's Sparrow and Scott's Oriole. What's the story behind Townsend?

@rahopko Sounds like you need to get to the WSO meeting this October.

I don't know if that has been brought up already or not, but it might be nice to send the petition of Cornell as well. I'm sure they'll change names if the AOS does, but at minimum it would be nice if they would retain all of the current names as an option.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I understand that. I don't really agree with this bill, either. But its existence does put additional pressure on the AOS to not change hundreds of birds names, which I think is ultimately a good thing.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

The Utah Legislature apparently doesn't like the AOS decision, either. Maybe this will put some additional pressure on them to reverse the decision, especially if some other states decide to follow suit...

Yes, but in this specific case of relating to this proposal, eBird said they are deferring to AOS for English names.

I am unable to view either of these links. Is there another way you could link them?

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I assume there is some process by which this petition will eventually be formally presented to the AOS. @rahopko when are you planning on doing this? Are you waiting for 5,000 signatures (which it seems like it will pass fairly soon)?

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Given the NACC and most of the SACC have signed it, I'd say they definitely are aware.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Has anyone passed the petition onto the SACC yet? I feel like they might be interested. ;) Especially if they were to spread it around a bit themselves.

Since images drive engagement, perhaps you should add a photo to the petition? What's your favorite eponymous bird? I suggest a Blackburnian Warbler.

These payments do make change.org show the petition essentially as an ad on the page of other petitions, however. I agree sharing is better. But these donations do do something.
