Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Yes, stability is practical and I am general in favor of it. But there surely can be exceptions. Also, the current system is also not perfect w.r.t. stability, since once in a while, people dig out some arcane source proving that someone else had priority and the scientific name changes.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

No, it's not similar. The "original author" did not create the species, he merely happened to be the first person to describe it. There is nothing preventing us from sitting down and deciding to abolish any "Principle" if it's not practical Why should the scientific naming of all species be...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Haha, maybe the same guide, but not the same edition ... I am not kidding, but if you get the latest edition of Czech translation of Collins, the Czech names for McQueen's and Houbara Bustards are now switched around compared to the previous edition, courtesy of the "Czech nomenclature...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I think that this is yet another misunderstanding. If I were a member of AOS, this bill would put additional pressure on me to push for the change even harder, just to make a strong statement that we are not gonna yield to this political nonsense, and I am pretty sure that many proponents of the...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

You did notice that Paul has conspicuously used a handful of foreign phrases in the very post you're quoting, right :)

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

So this makes the number of opponents roughly double that the number of people who supported the BN4B movement a couple years ago. However back then, it had much less publicity and I am not sure that people really knew that there is a sizeable opposition to measure against. I am a bit surprised...
