Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I agree. But, rules and guidelines change. Nothing is set in stone. All that needs to happen is that a critical mass of postmodernists get into the ICZN. They do not care about science's practices as they relate to priority, rules, rights, etc., for these are merely tools of 'white colonialism'...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Well I just took the time to write the most thoughtful, polite, yet direct statements I could on this, and submitted them at the AOS site mentioned above. I'm asking that they simply go back to the NACC's reasonable proposal. Negotiate. Be moderate. Give both sides some ground. And remember that...

Can you describe it or post the text here for those of us that do not use FB or X?

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I thought of an interesting case study in this. Do you know John McWhorter? He is a self-described "liberal Democrat" and a professor of Linguistics. He is also black. He is the author of a book called "Woke Racism" which is very critical of the entire woke (his word choice) worldview. Is his...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Practically speaking, that is good advice. Which is why I have tried to avoid using that word here unless we are specifically talking about the word (which I would rather not do). Again, practical good advice, but the entire debate is 100% politically loaded thanks to the forces that have...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I think that is mostly correct, except for: (1) some people on the left still use the term to favorably describe their worldview (as in the "9 rules for woke birders" article - you realize that is a "pro-woke" piece, right?) and (2) it isn't fair to associate it with liberalism. There are plenty...

And many liberals, such as Bill Maher. Some people want this all to be "W-word" vs. MAGA (another label some are quite fond of using). It is hardly that simple.

I'm not interested in labeling people, but trying to refer to the ideology that is driving this decision. We have no choice but to affix monikers if we want to converse. If you want to see labeling go off the rails, visit the Bird Names for Birds site and see how often they use the label "racist."

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Yes, understood, but I'll ask again. What term should we use when we want to refer to the political philosophy of the people who invented and use the term themselves? As in "Nine rules for the woke birdwatcher"... ? I'd really like to know, because my goal is to find an accord, not make the...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I agree 100% that name-calling isn't effective. I try to refrain from doing so. It is bad form and it only hurts your cause. But people on the right or in the middle didn't invent the term "woke" - the left did. And they have used it plenty of times themselves to label their own political...
