Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Josh is a good egg, but his views have obviously been warped by living in euroland. ;) I was aware he's spent a lot of time in South America--but that's not really the "here" that's most relevant (it's Mexico and the U.S./Canada).

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

What you say is not accurate. Mexicans refer to those from the U.S. and Canada as "norteamericanos." So it's not a perspective those north of the border are imposing on them. Your complaint is more an instance of people who don't live in the western hemisphere trying to tell people who live...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Well I don't know where you got your definitions from, and don't necessaily accept them, but it is easy to fit the bill within these definitions. A bill that has the effect of preventing the change of honorifics for those who have supported slavery and oppression of indigenous peoples in the...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

We disagree about whether the bill might be racist. Please educate yourself so that you learn that something can be racist even if it doesn't say that it is racist. As for the petition, I agree it is not racist and defended it from such charges on another forum. If you read my post carefully...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

It's arguably about racism; akin to not wanting to remove confederate statues. (Yeah, they said that was just about preserving history--ha, ha.) Aligning yourselves with it will just fuel the notion that your opposition to the AOS proposal is racist.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

This is far to the right of what your petition says. It proposes to freeze bird names as of 2020--even with arguably offensive eponyms; not consider them on a case-by-case basis.

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I have encountered the "non-logical puritanism" on the bird name issue as well. I think what has affected the far left in the U.S. the most in the manner you suggest are the reaction to the George Floyd tragedy and the success of the "me too" movement rather than DT. Those both reasonably...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Actually, you guys could easily fix that issue yourselves. Just change the name of "your" robin, which would probably affect fewer birds and people, and the conflict disappears. We all know brits are famous for being flexible about what they call their birds.;) But I will note that I...
