Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

Presumably then, the synonym; Earless Tragopan would be acceptable?

No, you are wrong there, Temmie! These new non-eponyms are being forced on us by the AOS in their pogrom.

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

I could possibly get 1 correct, but no definites. 2 or 3 of them could be Red-backed, same for Brown-backed and Grey-bellied. What does Starry night even mean? If you live in an inner city how much of the night sky can you see and how many look up into the night sky? I'm colour blind, so calling...

I have no idea what your native tongue is. The way you write, I automatically assumed that you were a native speaker. I apologise if I have inadvertantly found the one weakness you have displayed in you ability to converse in the language. It was not my intention.

How relevent is that when species are becoming extinct, due to humanity? Birds don't care what we call them. This whole bruhaha is diverting the conversation and therefore the effort to save them away from their chances of survival.

I personally, do not view endangered lives as objects and never will. I also see this whole argument as detrimental to these living beings and that by spending time diverting the argument and funds away from these lifeform's chances of survival is reducing their chances of survival. Humanity...

Just so. That 'truth' is also variable and in the eye of it's defender or critic. If you suit your arguments on what either you perceive or want others to believe as the truth, then it is quite flexible. Why do some politicians get away with half the rubbish they spout? Especially when they have...

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

I agree with both of you. The thing about relevance, people being ignored tend to do stupid things. It may even be a clever game play, where they do a u-turn at the 11th hour after somebody is "sacrificed", but actually only moves on to pastures new. People will see that they are coming round to...

It might be hyperbole, but you bit.. That said, people have been sacked or sidelined for a lot less. That is why people are scared to rock the boat. Somebody sitting in acadaemia somewhere needs to publish to stay relevant and conform to local politics to fit in. Sometimes that is evident by...

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

Unless of course you buy one because your current one is decades out of date, or go online to update your old version. Accounting for all the sci/common name changes, adding to that the splits, lumps changes of genera, therefore position in field guide etc, I wonder what would be easier...

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

Any one ever seen the film Supposing they gave a war and nobody came? It seems to me that everybody is enslaved to what ever "they" decide is happening as far as taxonomical changes go. I can understand why people do it if the geneticists discover that x is really y and never really belonged in...

Have you tasted vegemite? I suppose its what you grow up with. Aussies may or not prefer it to marmite. New Zealanders, well I'm not sure if the dislike the Australians or the English more, although what was to become marmite was invented by Justus von Liebig. He knew there would be an argument...

Big Island could become Peanutbutter Cheese and Jelly, Maui becomes Marmite, Molakai, O'ahu, Kauai, Ni'ihau, Kaho'olawe and Lanai are still up for ideas, but Midway Atoll need severe help! Midway is pretty naff. Sure its mid way between 2 random points, but boring! Johnston Atoll has to change...

My cats have black skin.. A friend of my rescued them, but they are bog standard moggies from Germany.

I think the original missionary or whomever translated it from the Māori was of that era where white supremacy was the Zeitgeist. Can't imagine that a Māori translator would have called it Flesh-footed Shearwater otherwise. Unless half the description was lost in the translation, or just...

Flesh coloured? What is flesh? Is it skin? If it is, then try explaining to a young child with anything other than the skin colour that fits, why it is not the same colour as their skin. Not necessarily racist. Simply confusing. Is flesh the meat under the skin? I can't recall seeing raw or...

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

Those very people are those we need to reach out to. I started birding because I came across a bird hide on holiday and went inside. There were several birders inside that were generous enough to explain what they were doing. After that I was hooked. I have noticed in my town alone, the numer...

I for one, only saw this thread today, as I was looking for something else. If I hadn't stumbled across it, I might have been blissfully unaware of a debate that may or may not make any difference to a professional body in their ivory tower. (Quite typical of acadaemia generally). My second...
