Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

There seems to be a lot of confusion about what biodegradable mean - it doesn't mean something will naturally deteriorate in the atmosphere, or will innately have a shorter usable life.

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

Thanks - that's not the warranty though, extra protection for US and Canada purchasers only for the initial 5 yrs. Looking it up it doesn't specify what the actual period is - rubber armour is classed as a wearing part and only has whatever is provided by law...

Do zeiss still limit armour replacement under warranty to two years, or has this been extended?

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

Swarovski have already stated heat and humidity are a contributory factor, and I think the clustering of reports on here support that - I think from the weighting of reports it might be the largest contributory factor. It's difficult to judge how much usage plays a part as one owner might use a...

Zeiss aren't exactly problem free and they've had armour problems in the past. I don't think any of the big binocular companies have a faultless track record, but all have ben pretty good at sorting out issues eventually.

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

I can imagine. What's odd is it doesn't seem to have affected everyone, and I've not seen any reports of people having to return a pair for a second time, which is also odd if people are saying 2-3 yrs lifespan. I do wonder whether some batches were better than others, but it's all guesswork.

Additional insurance costs makes sense. I liked the Leica Noctivids - more CA than ELs and NLs, but for me not so bad that I found it distracting. Balance in the hand wasn't quite as good either, but they had a very engaging pleasant view to them -could happily use them.

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

That's over 100 years to biodegrade once the material is in the ground not whilst on the unit. Why does it cost so much more for you to ship to Austria than the UK?

For those affected they seem to be working on a long term solution, and in the mean time replacing for free. even if out of warranty, I'm not sure what else you can reasonbly expect a company to do. Turnaround on repairs hasn't been 4 months for a while - recent reports suggest around 4-6 weeks...

No chance when they're fixing it for free.

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

One problem with rubber is whilst it is reasonably biodegradeable in it's natural state, to have a useable product it's generally mixed with other substances and you end up with something that will take over 100 years to biodegrade. Whilst rubber harvesting can be done sustainably a lot is still...

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

It depends on the rubber, but generally it's processed and mixed with other substances and can take over 100 years to bio-degrade. There's also the associated deforestation issues.

It was changed to a more environmentally friendly formula. Swarovski will re-armour them free of charge if you contact them. Whether it's still an issue or whether it was only with early batches no one knows.
