R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Here is another shot from my local patch but this time taken with the 800mm f11 lens (gives 1280mm FF FOV). This is a amazing value for money lens IMO (I paid £650). Its a glossy Ibis.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Yes I got mixed up with another pic I had just posted in another forum which I took with the 800mm f11 lens with which I often use the 20mm limiter when shooting in the estuary. I have now correct.

I am still very much enjoying the R7 for birds, the number of keepers compared with my old 7d2 is off the charts. The attached shot was using a 1.4x converter on my RF 100-500 which works brilliantly with very little reduction in IQ, this combo gives 1120mm FF FOV and is easily hand-holdable...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Hi Mike, I am a little surprised that you are getting such a small keeper rate, I shoot with the Electronic shutter at 15 fps in Craw and almost always just take a burst of around 1/2 sec or so which gives 7 or 8 very similar images - there may be 1 or 2 that are not pin sharp when viewed at...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

I find the R7 + 100-500 a very good combo for birds in flight (attached shot taken with this combo). With my 800/11 lens it can be difficult to find the bird in the viewfinder and when you do it is sometimes difficult to keep it inside the smaller AF area - when you do the R7 latches on OK. I...

Linnet - This one was taken with the RF100-500 + RF 1.4x converter. Still very much enjoying the R7 with a couple of long lenses, for me its been an absolute game changer.

I have just done a google search for Greenfinch in-flight Frank and those that show the wing in this position are almost all the same, it part of the wing tip. try it yourself.

If you mean the whitish halo on the wing tips, it is exactly the same on the unconverted and unprocessed RAW straight from the Camera - I think it is just the way the light was at the time. There are other shots of the same bird which are the same.

Thank you Ev4. I do not use Lightroom but only a very old version of Photoshop (CS6). For noise reduction I use Topaz Denoise AI as a plugin in CS6 which works great. I have no problems up to ISO 6400 on the R7 and even ISO 12800 is workable but I avoid going over that.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Thanks Mike, I have not done a lot of BIF with the R7 and only had the 100-500 for a few weeks, the addition of the 1.4x extender certainly slows down the AF a bit but is still fine for perched birds. I am going to have a crack at some Swallows in flight soon but will not be using the 1.4x , not...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Still enjoying the R7, here a couple from last week taken with the R7 and RF100-500 + 1.4x extender (so 1120mm FOV)

Wheatear taken with the R7 and RF 800mm f11 lens (so 1280mm fov) handheld. I am still impressed with this lens/combo.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Taken with the R7 and RF 800mm f11. BIF is not easy with the 800/11 because of the narrow FOV making it difficult to pick up the bird in the viewfinder/focus area but once you do the R7 latches on to the bird(s) no problem.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Took this one with the R7 and RF 800mm f11 (so 1280mm fov). nothing to write home about for sure but considering I was 70 yards away (I paced it out later on) it did not turn out to bad! Without this combo I would not have even tried for the shot.

Oystercatcher - R7 + RF 800mm f11. with the 1280mm fov its not always easy to pick-up flyers in the view finder but when you do the R7 latches on to the bird no problem.
