    Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot of interest in subspecies, so a lot of named subspecies are probably not diagnosable or are of dubious utility. Not many people are really interested in critical appraisal of their morphology as the focus of research. I don't think this is a USA only...

    They have a complete list of subspecies, but a lot of these may not be valid or field-identifiable. A closer model would be the the subspecies group system that Cornell uses for the Clements and Ebird checklists. Hopefully the WGAC checklist will keep adopt that system as well when it comes out.
