I don't find "the market has spoken" statements relevant or very useful. In today's high-tech, late-stage capitalism world of huge corporations and small business being forced to shut down, choices of what products are sold are just as likely to result from collusion as Adam Smith-style...

I would hypothesize that 8x became more popular as wider-field designs improved and 8x could offer the same FOV as the older 7's at a higher power.

    The venerable Nikon E-series is a good example of how the range of selection has atrophied: A series - 7x35, 7x50, 8x30, 9x35, 10x35, 12x40 E series - 7x35, 8x30, 10x35, 12x40 E2 - 8x30, 10x35

But those three have compromises to some degree over the NL's. All the smaller ones do - either color correction or edge sharpness, and maybe other areas. Swaro has the 8x30 CL for a compact bino.

For me 8x is the best choice if you only have one binocular. If you're to have 2, 3, or beyond, that's when 7x is my favorite. But even for 1 pair there are advantages to 7x that could make the best choice for some people. There's definitely a trend toward smaller product lines in the top...

When I do a search on "7x35 binoculars" at B&H photo, there are tons of models that come up - the size is still popular. It's the higher-end premium binocular niche that moved to 8x. Maybe because birders are the ones spending a lot of money on binos and they prefer 8 or 10x?

I saw that! I couldn't help but wonder, how did you find NOS on 40-year old binoculars? Must be a story behind that. I was lucky to find new-condition E's from Japan on ebay and also scored a new condition E-c by directly soliciting (begging) a forum member on CN. Don't like to do that but...

No! it's a 7x35E and a 7x35E-c. The C's improve the optics a bit but add 2 ounces of weight, so the E's have their own charm. I love the size & shape of these.

I think I'll like them! :) 7x35 is a wonderful size, I already have two of them and I'm hoping to keep it that way

I meant if the edges aren't as sharp and there's more false color, they're not on par optically....not trying to rain on the parade, several people I know love these 7x35's, they sound great

So they're on par with the others....except for where they're not on par :D

yeah, it sounds like the brass Tele Vue. I like the stereo setup! They were way ahead of the curve. I know an electrician who spent like 6 months wiring up a single new-construction mansion up here. They had an Ipad in the wall of every room to control things.

Yes, they remind me of "Bang & Olufsen" in the stereo world - I think that's a fair analogy

I think this was my point. These products are sold in various design and marketing niches. If they made 7x UV's, they'd intrude on the Retro space. If they made those changes to Retrovid, it would intrude on the UV niche. Cannabilization and all.

This sounds like a description of a 7x35 Ultravid or Noctivid
