    My understanding, probably on the simplistic side, is you either accept the split or you have to lump Chatham Shag with the old Stewart Island Shag - Chatham Shag is a daughter species of Otago Shag, but from an extinct lineage that occurred further north on South Island, genetically Chatham...

    I think structurally it looks better for Cook's rather than Pycroft's but most years there's confusing pterodromas seen on that trip between the Bounties & the Chathams. We did catch a Cook's in the Tuku this time last year so they are around. See you tomorrow!
