Merry Holidays and Happy Christmas and joyeuse Hanoukka and so on and so forth to you all. I’m in Buenos Aires so it is a bit of a different flavor to the holidays - dinner at 10 pm, dancing cumbia and reggaeton in the garden, kids opening presents at midnight, then a couple more hours of...

These roosts usually last some time don’t they? I’d be keen to see such a spectacle but won’t be back in CH until mid-late January most likely.

Forecast to be 32-38 for the next two months … not so many Long-tailed Tits about however 😎 In all seriousness my partner is grumbling quite a bit about the weather already. I have a more flexible schedule than she does (we moved here for her corporate job, I got out of the corporate world...

Indeed health first! Zurich is however a better place to end up in hospital than many. Something I do contemplate a bit while seeing the world. But not many Neomorphus in Zurich so I am taking my risks 😎

At some point I will chase one I think. It would be a lifer. But tomorrow I migrate to Brazil, Guyane, and Argentina for 2,5 months 😎 Ticino and Pine Buntings are lovely but Neomorphus and Cotinga and Lepidothrix are what feeds my soul 🤣

Yeah but a lovely bird and one that makes you think of warmer climes... not a bad thing with the present weather!

Wow a second Sib Stonechat in short while. I wonder how much is just everyone being "switched on" now and looking for them?

Just N of Oberer Katzensee (near the farm that sells flowers) is a single field with approximately 1m high vegetation, all the other fields are plowed / cut / etc. GPS is about 47.4363, 8.4998. If the bird is still there, there will probably be a lot of birders and it will thus be easy to find.

A presumed Sib Stonechat was found at Katzensee on Weds evening and was still present yesterday afternoon/evening. I'm not much of a twitcher and it's not a terribly exciting bird but hey it was an excuse to get out on the bike despite mixed weather. The 4th bird I've arguably twitched since...

And re: reintroductions, I see both sides. The Bald Ibis project is a LOT of money for a population that may or may not become self sustaining when almost nothing is going to protect the remaining wild birds. So I think the resistance is less to the idea of conservation and more to the use of...

Re: the passing of seasons. I saw a Willow Warbler in South Africa today so I guess at least that indivudual is no longer in Europe either 🤣

Mostly they get found by ear I should guess, a pretty distinctive call note and it is on a lot of birders radar as a “common” vagrant/scarce migrant.

@Mcnswiss2 I did look briefly for the Ruddy Turnstone but didn't find it. My partner and I were headed past there anyways so brought along bins and we rode along the waterfront but no joy. Not the end of the world, eBird tells me I've logged Ruddy Turnstone 170+ times! But always a nice bird, I...

The threat that this could be the last really warm weekend of the summer meant we spent it picnicking, floating on the river, cycling, and hiking. Not much birding. I guess the high pressure reduces the chances of particularly interesting migrants in a place as mundane as the city of Zürich so I...

I have been hearing and seeing Black WP around Käferberg regularly the past month, FYI. I also think that Middle Spotted is resident and not really uncommon, just very hard to detect with leafed out trees if they don't call. Green is the one that seems the most sporadic to me there?

I see / hear them with some regularity around / above the Limmat in Zurich, particularly around Letten. I semi-assumed they were breeding in town but have no clue if that is the case?

    Switzerland 2023

Yeah I see/hear Black WP more than Green WP and have seen them (last year at least) seemingly nesting. But haven’t seen / heard them in a few months now.

    Switzerland 2023

Are you commuting across Käferberg? I've noticed the same thing, I hadn't heard / seen Green WP there in many months then starting a couple weeks ago I hear them or see them somewhat regularly. Black WP seems to come and go (or at least very effectively go silent) but I have seen it breed there...

Hehe yeah I've seen their sapsucker - reminiscent holes several times in dying and treeline spruce forest, but always seem to manage to miss them :) Not worried though, good things come to those with patience and I have plenty of time to keep trying :)

I was with a friend, we rented a 4WD and saw a good bit - Margalla Hills (White-cheeked Tit), Padhri Private Reserve (Sind Woodpecker), Shogran (Orange Bullfinch, White-throated Tit, much more), and then the Karakoram Highway to and past Gilgit, with the main objective of the whole trip being...

I am just home from a wonderful birding trip in Pakistan. A morning bike ride around Chatzensee and surrounds was a bit underwhelming in comparison, but was nice and green all the same. Time to start doing more cycling and hiking, summer is settling in...

And a pair of Northern Bald Ibis nesting (or attempting to at least) on the window ledge of an urban building near the ZRH airport (in Rümlang)... comical, I guess these released birds are really quite acclimated to people, it's not like a Peregrine on the 28th floor of a building where there...

On the N side of the Col du Marchairuz and off into the woods a good bit. Purportedly the area is also good for Tengmalm's and Pygmy Owls and for Hazel Hen and for Eu Woodcock but all I had was heard only Woodcock at dusk...
