It’s a mine field isn’t it! I was looking and trying to find similar songsters. It does have a Sylvia feel to it - closest I can get that would fit the size and bill profile are Orphean or Barred Warbler. I should add it was the day after the massive storm that clearly grounded a lot of...

Marsh Warbler was another of my original thoughts, but the profile and bill length of the bird pretty much rule this out. I was lucky enough to see Marsh Warbler in the UK this year (very scarce) and it doesn’t fit the shape of the bird I saw.

No sign of the mystery warbler this morning, and still not even a sniff of Balearic Warbler unfortunately. Real surprise was 21 Greater Flamingos flying along the coast towards Sa Coma. 4 Wrynecks, Redstart, Pied Fly and the usual suspects completed another pleasant morning.

There was a large colony of House Sparrows very close so you may be hearing that in there. I had stopped in the area as there were migrants everywhere (30+ Pied Flys, Redstart, 3 Whinchat and lots of other birds moving through) and I was actually watching a juv Woodchat at the time (first time...

It certainly wasn’t a Nightingale, I have these locally to me in the UK and see them fairly regularly. It was a large long billed warbler, but typically with these species on migration they can be very tricky. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it back out there this morning for another look, I’ll be...

Fair enough, I’ve only seen Olivaceous in Spain and only heard the classic song then many years ago! It was unusual must admit, unfortunately only fleeting views but clearly something interesting. I’ll return to the area tomorrow am in case it is still around. The general area was full of...

I’m fairly happy this is Western Olivaceous based on the brief view I had and the song, fits perfectly with the first song recorded on the xeno canto website. Confirmation from Houdini would be great, and an idea of how scarce this is for Mallorca??

I’ve got a longer sound recording but it won’t upload onto here. I could email it to you so you can have a look into it?

Olivaceous is the best fit by miles, have been listening on the xeno website. It was one of my initial thoughts, scarce migrant in Mallorca but spot on time wise from what I can see?

Took my first walk out to Punta Amer this morning, still no Balearic Warbler but a huge fall of Pied Flys. Juvenile Woodchat and an interesting warbler calling, I’m thinking it may be Western Olivaceous. Attached the video of song, any thoughts? Saw the bird briefly, large warbler with long...

Brilliant Mike, I know exactly where you mean now and was where I thought you were referring to. I’ll give it my best shot and let you know how I get on. Thanks again Ryan

Hi Mike, I think I know roughly where you mean, but a map would be useful all the same just so I know for sure. Thanks for the advice

    Mallorca 2023

Hi all, I’m off to Sa Coma for the second year running on Saturday (non birding holiday) but I always take my bins! I spent a few mornings last year walking around Sa Punta de N’Amer which is a fabulous area. Having looked fairly hard for a Balearic Warbler I have been unsuccessful so far in...
