There has been a rare bird on the last day of the year for the last three years. Not today though. So, that’s it then. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who reads this thread, it is very dear to me and I feel very gratified by the amount of interest shown. I am deeply involved with...

Lovely collection of birds there David. That’s what birding here is all about. I echo your sentiments entirely, great company, lots of laughs, all conducted on this beautiful Island. I really couldn’t ask for more. I will have a go at putting highlights of the year on here although I don’t...

Happy New Year to you too Pep and thank you for all your posts and help on this forum. I hope you get your Puffin. I’ve only ever seen one, at the Cap de Ses salines. It was reported the day before by seasoned sea watcher Krister. I was there the next day before dawn and it flew across the water...

Pep seems to have had a great day, firstly by seeing a very unseasonable Spotted flycatcher (tyrrhenica) at La Gola and 2 Slender-billed gulls there too. Later, a young common crane in fields near the depuradora, albufera. Also seen out of season, a Woodchat. I saw one on January 10th this year...

Nice one Ian, so pleased you connected with the Ring ouzels. Great birds. Yes, love is in the air for many species which I’m told often pair up before the end of the year. I guess all species are different though. Only other news is of a possible Great-spotted cuckoo seen at sa Barrala by Biel...

A longer seawatch tonight produced a slightly better total of 83 Balearic shearwaters. One Yelkouan shearwater also went south, overtaking two Balearic shearwaters as it went. The sea was quite calm under a cloudless sky but the birds were quite far out. It’s a wonderful place to be, looking...

A great report Stew of a very happy time. We certainly scooted round the Island quite a bit and saw some super birds. Just out of interest, I have visited the same trees where we recorded the Goldcrests and I didn’t see a single one. My guess is that they were a newly arrived influx. The...

Blow me, if I didn’t just see a Wren in my garden. That’s a first. A while ago, the subject of Wrens came up on this thread. I never find them easy in the regular places I visit. But then again, I don’t hear much so Merlín will no doubt help me in the future. Mike

Algerian hedgehogs were mentioned a few weeks ago so I was very happy to see one yesterday, no doubt looking for somewhere to hibernate. I don’t know when they go into hibernation but as the weather has been so warm, I guess not yet. It’s now quite cold at night and early mornings register only...

Another Stock dove has been seen near Campanet by Maties. There have been a few records of this Mallorca rarity recently, including one I saw at s’Amarador last month. My guess is that some of them get overlooked as “pigeons” generally don’t get a second look. I find the Stock dove very...

I have been to Sa Barrala every day recently in the hope of finding something rare. It’s that time of the year again when surprises turn up. There was a report of a possible Black-throated thrush seen briefly by Maties. It certainly sounded like one. That would be a wonderful Christmas present...

I went to the polo pitch near Sa Barrala in search of the elusive Fieldfare but no joy. There were no Cranes either at this traditionally good site. It has been a poor year to date for this species with only flyovers so far. There is still time yet for an influx and hopefully some Hawfinch and...

Congratulations David, thoroughly deserved after all your diligent hours in the field in all weathers. It was a great moment and I was so pleased to be with you to share the occasion. Welcome to the 200 Club. Next year, we will really go for it. All the best, Mike Ps. The pies were fabulous...

Last seawatch from Porto Petro produced a miserable total of 3 Balearic shearwaters. Tonight I only managed a bit better 9 birds flying south. One gannet went north. Things will pick up soon and I can look forward to seeing bigger numbers plus the possibility of a Great skua or two. Mike

It will be great if you make it tomorrow as I will be with you. I’m sure you will but I can’t guarantee it. You know what birds are like. I will be happy to pat you on the back. There’s something to look forward to. See you in the morning, pies at the ready. Mike

I’m sure you will join the 200 club David. When I went down Camino de Sa Barrala, from Hotel fontsanta with Stew, there were several Curlew on the first path on the left, 7 I think, so I would think they are still around. Good luck, I will text you with any news. Mike

Nothing to add Stew except a photo of a very distant Bonelli’s eagle and one of the Goldcrests you so cheekily found on my doorstep. I’ve never seen one there. We will walk the coast here tomorrow to see how many Goldcrests we can count, double figures will be the target, there seems to have...

Stew and I decided to go to the depuradora at s’Albufera this morning to see if the lesser Scaup was still around. We arrived to see Kevin already ahead of us. It was windy and rainy and very little was showing from the tower hide. We therefore moved further down the lane to scan the lower...

Some superb photos there derban. What a treat with the Osprey display. More thrushes seem to be appearing and a Brambling has been seen by Biel. I’m off up north with Stew so I hope to report something good later. Ever hopeful, Mike

Mike Swiss and I met up this morning at Cap de Ses Salines, one of my most regular birding spots to visit. Mike was as ebullient as ever and we had some great conversations about birding around the world, whilst the ladies went off for a long walk. We saw 5 northern gannet and Mike picked out a...

I spent some time thinking about the mystery bird at last nights seawatch. I think it may have been a Great crested grebe. It fits better than anything else so I will stick to that, if only so I don’t have to think about it anymore. Mike

I have just been to my local lighthouse for a seawatch. The last two visits have drawn a blank so I was not too hopeful, I even took a clicker with me which was a tad optimistic. As soon as I got there, I saw a dolphin breaching. It was a lovely sight. I know nothing about their status here...
