    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

I've now had an opportunity to use my new Gitzo 1545T in the field a little, and I'm very impressed with the stability it provides, even when supporting a full size scope. Here's a little video of a view taken through a Vortex Razor at 60x, over a distance of approx 13km, between Devil's Dyke...

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

The kit was for sale on a good deal, basically! Ball heads are generally smaller, too, which is also what I need for traveling on planes, etc. So, I'm happy to give it a go. If the kit came with the fluid head, however, I would have preferred that. As noted, I'll give it a chance before...

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

Ah, that's the very same kit that I bought online recently - currently awaiting delivery! (GK1545T-82TQD). Fluid heads would seem ideal, but Gitzo are famous for their high-quality ball heads, so I'll reserve final judgement until I've had a chance to actually try it out in the field. Depending...

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

Probably not, but I can't say for sure, of course. Also, Gitzo tripods apparently come with low quality draw-string bags, but they do sell high quality padded cases separately. Series 1 carry bags have had some quite bad reviews, however, due to the overall tight squeeze needed to get the legs...

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

I've heard great things about the Gitzo GH1720QR. It has a single locking wheel mechanism for all points of movement, so it should be very intuitive and simple to use with a scope. It's on my Christmas list, anyway!

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

I have to admit: its not arrived in the post yet! I'm planning to use it with a Vortex Razor 27-60 85mm, so I'm curious to see if it's really going to be sturdy enough for the job. I'd expect that it would work great with an ATC, however, if the locking system is indeed to be relied upon!

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

It is important to be sceptical with Black Friday deals, of course. They're not always what they seem. I recently bought a Gitzo series 1 traveller for £450 from a popular UK camera retailer. That was a few weeks ago. Now that Black Friday has come around, I noticed that they have just put the...
