    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

You just shouldn't be able to unscrew a scope from a tripod plate without touching the tripod plate, might as well just have a screw sticking out the bottom of the scope.

Totally agree that the CTC 30/75 is an entirely underated scope. I've said it before but it's just great for chucking in a bag with a monopod and heading out with. Light enough and bright enough. It's not optically perfect but really only having 30x mag is its greatest limitation.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

I use an optech USA tripod strap (available worldwide I believe), works very well and would be even better if it had a small scope, ball head and some carbon legs rather than a chunky aluminium tripod and monarch 82 dangling off it! It doesn't help weigh down the centre column but I'm sure a...

The tripod foot on the atc doesn't look great but it's good it's at least got the bigger thread size as an option. With a decent size flathead screwdriver and the larger thread you should get a half decent grip. I still think the atc and stc are mainly designed for monopod use - or at least the...

Some people need is another person's want, I'd live and let live, what optics are you using at the moment out of curiosity?

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

It's true and it's not. I like the sentiment though, seeing most things doesn't necessitate a wide selection of expensive optics and the thought of that is great for enhancing the hobbies appearance of accessibility, more birders means more interest in nature and likely more enthusiasm to...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Not exactly, the benefit of the larger exit pupil is purely a result of the lower magnification.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Exit pupil is just aperture divided by magnification. So the 17x mag and 56mm aperture of the atc/stc gives you your 3.29mm - why they state 3.4 I don't know!

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Exactly. All those small ish scopes struggle at higher magnifications to keep the exit pupil from getting quite dim other than in very good light. Even my old 85mm was quite a lot dimmer at 60x where the exit pupil was at 1.4mm the same as the atc is at 40x. You can see how the aperture is...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

At the risk of sounding glib it depends how far away the birds are but for most of my birding 40x is more than enough, the tiny exit pupil at 40x of the stc/atc though wouldn't be enough for me. I tend to find 8x fine for most of my local patch with the scope not often venturing out of the bag...

Thank you for writing that up, I'd wanted to read a comparison of those 2 scopes as a current ctc owner. I suppose the laws of physics in respect of the exit pupil come into play with eye positioning - at 30x and above especially, your old ctc would be at 2.5mm at 30x the stc down at 1.8mm -...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Very true. I suppose its the complete optic system design without needing seperate eye pieces or in some scopes case objective modules - or the (apparent) lack of necessity for a tripod that sets it apart and may appeal to new scope users. I tend to recommend a used 70/80mm scope with a zoom...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

I can think of a few more reasons as well... The focusing by twisting the eye piece being another to add to the list, not ideal for Digi scoping I'd imagine. I've not handled the ctc with any special care but as a quality item it's still in good nick, the stay on case helps, and the fact it...

Very true with the ctc, never see them out birding, practical - definitely, useful - most certainly, fashionable absolutely not!

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

I'd love to know how the 2 compare if you get a moment, I'm not too tempted to upgrade/change from the my ctc but would be interested to know if there's any significant optical advantages of the stc (I'm assuming it's the stc you have on order?) Will

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

It was never going to be hand holdable for any higher mag or extended viewing work. Sturdy monopod should work out ok though.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

It's always looked to me that it's designed for use handheld at lower mag's, leaning against something or on a monopod up to its maximum magnification. Screw in monopod's without a tripod plate don't tend to budge much in my experience. I also tend to use the small size thread and a bush...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Cost not withstanding this sounds like a great idea for a scope and binocular set -perfect set for a bit of back country backpacking and probably all you really need most of the time.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Yourself and Fazalmajid's knowledge about this stuff is way above my level! Im very confident when I see someone with a swaro 115 binoviewer thingy on a huge tripod with a gimbal head that the are definitely getting a better view than me sitting on a tiny stool so I can just about get a stable...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Yes all scopes work best on a tripod, no debate. They work adequately on a monopod at shorter extensions and adequately when rested on something solid although this is only really useable at lower mags. The orange atc's biggest problem that I see is that with the half shell in place it looks...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Compared with my ctc 30/75 the new stc is 200g lighter, 50mm shorter (when ctc is folded) and has a very similar field of view at 30x mag (ctc is 41m @1000) I'd not be tempted to swap currently as the ctc gathers much more light so can be used in a greater range of lighting conditions and would...
