    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Or magnification might be a bit lower than the stated 17x, and rounded upwards in specs, as 16.5x makes a 3.39 mm exit pupil.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

    It's all within the margin of rounding errors. 56/16.5x = 17x = 3.39mm = 3.4mm 56/16.7X = 17x = 3.35mm = 3.4mm

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Reasonable to save money and environment not including stuff that only some will use. Swaro (and Kowa) don't include cases with their scopes in general.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Nice walkthrough. I think they expected a bit much here, ATC/STC is not a 65mm scope. Swaro is also pricier in US than in EU (relative to Kowa). Does "a bit better" refer to the fact that the 554 has 45x vs 40x mag. for the STC? They don't get into much depth on the optical qualities, more than...

I'm not so sure, I even did struggle with the ED50+20x WA on a monopod.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Focal ratio ATC (straight version) seems to be a bit faster (285/56 ≈ f/5?) than both ATS65 (≈f/7*) and ATS80 (≈f/5.75*). But slower than ATX 115 at f4.8**. Faster focal ration can be harder to correct for CA. I see less CA in the ATS65 compared to the ATS80 for example. * ATS65 vs ATS 80 **...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

It's a nice scope (I have one), but very hard to use other than on a good tripod (too long for monopod). We'll have to wait to see how the ATC works in practical birding situations. Does it work using it as in the marketing, is my question.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

I'm pondering if this could replace my 65mm scope...which I'm reluctant to bring a bit too often. A smaller/shorter scope can be usable on a small ball head and monopod, or a smaller tripod. Total weight might be 1.5 kg instead of 3-3.5 kg. I rarely use 40x-50x on my scope, 25-30x 95% of the...

What scope of this size, weight and quality would be better for the money?

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

The ATC is 4-5 times the price so I don't think that is very likely. Made in Austria is my impression.

I think straight will be easier as well. But maybe top-focuser would have been better. Let us know how it goes. Good FOV at 17x though. Straight or angled will be tough choice on this one. Can see advantages with angled in some cases. But will have to see to believe this one.

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Nice scope, very sleek design, impressive wide-angle eyepiece specs (AFOV 57-71°). Maybe 1 kg is a bit too much as a backup-scope. Not completely convinced on the helical focuser, even though Swaro has a very smart solution in the extra bottom plate. And how useful will this be without a...
