Thanks Chris. That makes a lot of sense actually, and simpler than my button & cog" method ! I'd used C3 as general wildlife and forgotten there were 4 "C" options so will follow your set up and just move general wildlife to C4.

Thanks Chris. Earlier you'd said ".....but where I need to pick out a partially obscured bird (where the bird detect sometimes struggles) I turn bird detect off and use S-AF with a single focus point." I guess what I was asking was how you do that quickly in practice. This is the only issue I...

Is the quickest way to change from small focus area to single focus area, to repurpose the AF-On button ? This still requires this button to be pressed and then the back cog to be turned each time. There's no single button that can be pressed to switch it ?

    New OM-1

Final question I promise :-). So i've set up C1 for perched bird and C2 for BIF. Front cogwheel changes exposure, back cogwheel changes aperture (rare I will use that). I think the only thing missing is the quick single button press to switch to single focus point/S-AF quickly for part hidden...

    New OM-1

Thanks Chris. Yes I'm using C-AF and small square. I don't have the issue with just the 300mm so it must be the light. I'm surprised I don't see the camera attempt focussing, passing the target as it attempts to focus too near to too far and back without picking the target up - rather it just...

    New OM-1

One frustration I have using the 300mm and 2x is that the camera seems unable to quickly change focus when I switch from close (say 20 feet away) to distant (say 120 feet away) or vice versa. When I point and half press the shutter the "white dot" in the central box searches across the box and...

    New OM-1

Yes that's exactly the option I'm looking for in the OM1. Under the AF menu there is an option to "reset lens" which is currently "off" but can be switched to "on". Guess I need to select "on" and then find out how to reassign the function of that button elsewhere in the menus (I've not tried...

    New OM-1

Ok thanks, I must have accidentally pressed it while raising the lens to shoot. Will just have to be more careful ! Sorry only got this a week ago so this trip is a bit of a crash course ! Fortunately nothing too rare on the IoW, just red squirrels, dartford warblers and wall lizards !

Is there a quick way to disable the L-Fn button on the 300m Pro lens ? It's proforma function is to stop AF and it keeps getting accidentally set when the lens brushes against my leg whilst walking. I then can't focus until I've realised what's happened and re-set it, and by then the bird is...

Thanks Ron, not sure how I missed that but yes that has done the trick ! Have been taking photos of Dartford Warblers and red squirrels on the Isle of Wight today and have to say the quality of the images has blown me away compared to what I'd have got with the heavy 7Dii/300/2x combo.

    New OM-1

A couple of quick questions; Does anyone else have an issue with the 300 lens manual focus ring continually slipping down so that when you go to take a picture, no auto-focusing happens, as manual focus has been selected on the lens ? Can't believe it's just me - presume when i walk it rubs...

    New OM-1

Looks a nice lens though I guess would need a rucksack/bag to carry it in addition to the OM1 and mounted lens. Those look good straps. Will have to see how the weight of the lens & 2x feels on the camera and take a view on whether to ditch the weight of tripod mount and attach the blackrapid...

    New OM-1

Thanks, yes my thinking is that I will just remove the 2x in darker situations as I do currently with the 7Dii/300/2x. Most of the larger or close mammals I ever need to photo are generally on safari from a jeep where it's possible to take a spare camera and for this I will continue to take and...

    New OM-1

Well I didn't "think about it" for too long. Just bought an OM1 + 300 pro + 2x converter. All should arrive on Thursday. I'm away on the Isle of Wight next week which is perfect with little in the way of crucial bird photos to screw up, but plenty of rainy time to get familiar with how the...

Thanks Steve. In poor light still use the 2x ? Hand held ?

    New OM-1

Last Question Chris....well maybe :-). I'm starting to think OM1+300+2x converter. My worry with the 1.4x would simply be losing the reach from where I am today, though of course I could probably afford to crop more heavily. I assume today with 7Dii I'm at 300 x2 x1.6 = 960. The OM1 with 300...

    New OM-1

Thanks Chris and Steve, ......I will need to have a think ! Heart says OM1 and 300 + 1.4x, take the 1.4x off for safari deer, wild dogs etc, use something else for the very occasional elephant/buffalo shot. 90% of my photos will be birds. Head says OM1 and 100-400 + 1.4x because I get the...

    New OM-1

Thanks Chris. So you typically set 3200 ISO, max aperture and then let camera select shutter speed ? Love the sharpness of that 3rd Motmot, and second Mountain-gem on the page you linked! Issues with EVF rings a bell. I bought a Sony RX10 IV bridge camera to use when bird/wildlife...

    New OM-1

Thanks. Wow, some stunning photos there ! They were mainly taken with the the 300 and 1.4x ? I'm no camera expert and I must confess I don't really understand "The 100 - 400mm is already equivalent to 200 - 800m in 35mm terms" which Steve mentioned and your "...at 840 effective length". Does...

    New OM-1

Thanks Steve. I recall you had moved from the Canon D7mkii to the Sony bridge camera. Do you find this a real step up from that camera ? Does the IBIS being "7 stops" mean that the IBIS allows you to shoot pictures that are as sharp as shots taken without IBIS with 7 stops less light ? Would...

    New OM-1

Hi all. I've read this thread with interest. I'm not photography expert and so don't understand much of the technical content. At present I use a Canon EOS 7D mkii with f2.8 300 prime lens and 2x converter. Very happy with quality of the photos in all conditions, taking the 2x converter off...
