Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

Its got dark on December 31st now so really can't see me adding anything. It's been a very fun and successful year and i did promise my wife at the beginning of it that longish trips would only be for lifers and not just year ticks and that they'd be fitted around parenting. Probably cost me a...

December 27th Spending sone of the holidays at the inlaws on the Warwickshire/Northamptonshire border and managed to get away for a few hours this morning to visit eyebrook reservoir. Lovely site nestled between some very fancy villages Wintering ducks from pretty much all the inland U.K...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

December the 17th Most of the week I'd been planning to head down to Exmouth on my day off to see the Olive-Backed Pipit and return via a black throated diver in Burnham. Then the diver flew off Wednesday and work left me just too worn out to make an early frosty start and I had a rest instead...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

December 11th In london for xmas drinks with friends so made my way to a very frosty Hyde park. Absolutely beautiful and quickly found some Egyptian geese. Took a bit longer but got a parakeet for a U.K. year tick as well. Wondering now if I can get to 450 species, not sure what is possible...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

Thanks. If it was U.K. it would be a milestone. I’m sure there are tropical birders who would consider it an ok trip total But it’s the most I’ve ever had in a year by a long long way and it’s been fun getting there

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

December 8th A rare totally free day with decent weather so set off for a quick shot aT the dusky warbler that had been showing intermittently in Bradford on Avon. Got there about 11 to news it had been showing. Unlike some twitches when a bird has shown the handful of birders there were...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

December 3rd After a few weeks with nothing new to add and a lot of family events one of them finally came up trumps. Driving back towards the m5 last night had a flyby barn owl coming out of the churchyard by gordano services. Not a bird I see often but i don’t think I’ve ever left it until...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

That sounds very close to my approach, phone photos of any new flowers and after a couple of times they do stick in my head. Wish I’d got more plants while I was in Cyprus but not much was flowering Birds are still the thing I care about most. Well maybe mammals but they’re even rarer but a...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

Thanks. I've always been interested in general nature and always been too influenced by wanting to see new things, I'm terrible for logging films and stuff I read too and always want to see everything by a given director so when I'm out I'll generally try and photograph and ID pretty much...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

final batch of lifer birds, Armenian Gull, Bonelli's eagle, Long Legged Buzzard and Eleanora's Falcon. Didn't get photos of the red throated pipit, slender billed gull or the warbler despite there being at least 3 warblers

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

The new butterflies for me might not have been the most extravagant (camera shy Pasha apart) but the joy of working over scree slopes looking for them was great and the numbers of blues was great to see this late in the year. African Grass Blue cyprus meadow brown African Ringlet...

Different levels of focus for different Wheatear We unfortunately only saw the one Cyprus Wheatear the whole trip, very briefly, through a dusty windscreen and it flew as soon as we tried to move the car on for a better angle. The Finsch's was gorgeous.

Nothing new yet despite some enjoyable birding on the headland but the walk back from the restaurant did bring the first photographable house gecko of the trip.

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

3rd November Another full day without too many targets left. Started out around the aroktiri marshes. First few stops provided a few new birds for the trip. Lovely views of bluethroat and much better ones of spurwinged lapwing than the other day but nothing actually new for the year. A...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

2nd November Took a tourist turtles and a swim boat out of paphos with the family. Highlight of the trip out was some flying fish. One of those things you see on tv over and over but I’d never seen in real life. Also a single Slender Billed Gull directly over the boat. Quite a smart gull in a...

And obviously November isn’t optimal for butterflies but the ones we had were great and there’s good numbers of whites and clouded yellows around

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

Thanks. Yes it was amazing. Think it could probably have been done with a hire car and ebird but a few of the tracks were a bit rocky. We’re here because it’s half term at home and it’s not really optimum for the birds. A think a few weeks earlier you can still get the owl and get a lot of...

Owen's lifetime of wildlife in a year.

That smashes through my original target of 413. I’ve been helped a lot by the holidays of course but I really feel like I’ve seen so much cool stuff this year. I’ve gone way past my start of 2022 totals for butterflies and reptiles. Don’t think I’ll make it to the bird or mammal ones but I’d...

November 1st A full days guided birding today that managed a lot of the Cyprus specialities as well as lot of really interesting general wildlife. Roosting fruit bats. My first praying mantis. Some amazing spiders wasps and bees, three dropwing species including gorgeous indigo and I finally...

Yes. Seems very common. Have seen quite a few at the water park today. Seems a very typical small wall lizard but they’re all split everywhere aren’t they Also 2 Turkish house gecko and a small blue butterfly with very distinctive underside that I’m not finding online yet. 22 Turkish gecko...
