    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

The Honey-Buzzard was a flyover somewhere around the borders of Kantons Zürich, Thurgau, Sankt Gallen, just yesterday. The LEO nest was (is?) at Allmend Chatzensee, not far from Büsisee, in a surprisingly visible location. I last saw the two owlets about 10-12 days ago. I was there about 5 days...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

On my side, the birding has been really, really slow. So slow that I am mostly not bothering. Lots of nice rafting, cycling, and hiking though. Saw my first Honey-Buzzard of the fall today which was probably the highlight of the past month of birding, aside from an active Long-eared Owl nest.

And generally increasing / recovering in population in FR, thus the increasing quantities of young birds wandering, no?

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Just an observation that occurs to me. Birding is a luxury, mostly available to those of us who live in the first world and have some economic freedom. I feel fortunate to have birded as much as I have, in as many places as I have. Rather than make a competition of where is better and where is...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Also, to both @jurek and @Mcnswiss2 - Selibuel sounds like a nice recommendation, I'll look forward to visiting at some point. Given the kind of complex public transit connections from Zürich, perhaps a bike will be involved, or at least a bit of camping to make the transit time worthwhile. Cheers.

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

I think these kind of comparisons are very misleading. Small territories will always have a huge advantage on species diversity / area. For instance, Panamá has a land area of 75000 km2 and has a bit over 1000 species registered. Malta is 316 km2 and has 470 or so species recorded. I don't think...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

This makes for a bit of interesting discussion - I hope my comments didn't come across as offensive :) On the issue of eBird and eBird's use elsewhere, Switzerland has the advantage of having a domestic interest in bird monitoring, databases, etc, so it has domestic support for some sort of...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Getting back to bird finding in Switzerland as discussed by @jurek and @Mcnswiss2 - here's my perspective. I've been living in Zürich for about 18 months. It's significantly harder than I would have expected to find information if you're not well plugged in as a Swiss birder. The RBA is not...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Agreed Stille Reuss and Flachsee are nice, among my favorite spots locally, and a nice outing by bike. Various friends and I here have differing opinions about the local sites but (my opinion of course) none of them are anything to get excited about, bird-wise, so I find myself gravitating to...

I am not much for photography, prefer to carry less weight and spend more time observing... I've still not been to Klingnauer Stausee. The Siberian Chiffchaff would be nice but not sure I'll make it anytime soon :(

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Had a lovely day with several hundred swans and 2 well seen Bewick’s and a couple more probables among the masses of Mute and Whooper. Also one GBB Gull. But yes it was cold. The forecast sun and 4C ended up being gray and windy and 0C, at least at Triboltingen, so after about two hours there...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Hey there... I've been in Zürich for about a year (though only in CH for a bit over 1/2 of the past year, somehow). Was out of CH for a few months this winter and am only back as of a week ago. I'll get my first real day out birding tomorrow, will probably go to Bodensee for swans. I hadn't (at...
