    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Common Yellowthroat for the second day. I would love to see it, I did not yet see this species as vagrant, but it is in Ticino. At the thought of crossing Gotthard tunnel with its ever-present traffic jam, all parts of my body fall down. There used to be a nice escape road through Airolo, but...

I saw 2 penduline Tits too. Very uncommon in Switzerland. I wonder where this Pygmy Cormorant comes from? This year, Pygmies bred in two places in Germany for the first time. I wonder if Germans ringed their young, for this bird appears not ringed.

Today a splendid day at Klingnauer Stausee with Pygmy Cormorant, other waterbirds and Lesser Woodpecker. I seen this species before, also in Switzerland, yet i liked it. If watching Pygmy Cormorant at 20 degrees warm in October in Switzerland is a sign of climate change - count me in!

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

The young White-tailed Eagle in Fanel was identified as freshly released in France, and weaing a transmitter. I hope the 'bomber' will settle in Fanel and start breeding sometime in the future. I only wonder why they breed White-tailed Eagles and release them, while it would be much easier to...

I went to Graubunden for hiking. One day I even did not take my bins out of a backpack... Graubunden is not a place for West European style birding - hardly any water or mudflats to note. But Swiss NP is good for perhaps the complete set of Alpine birds.

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

A weekend in Graubunden brought common small mountain birds, but also several Golden Eagles, Red Deer and Chamois. Do we have a marmot biologist on the forum? Do Alpine Marmots have different alarm calls for different threats? Calling marmots are a good way to spot a Golden Eagle, and it seemed...

Yes, the data are used in bird monitoring and conservation. Without the large community of hobby birders, birds would be much poorer known and protected, and most ornithologists would not have jobs. I feel it is an unspoken mutual obligation - birders share data and support conservation, but...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

The most rewarding outdoor recreation I found in Switzerland is going for long hikes or bicycle rides along mountain / hill ridges, enjoying the scenery and casually birds. In Switzerland one can do it for years without visitng the same mountain twice. Outdooractive and Swisstopo are your...

Hi Pbjosh, I agree that specialities in the Alps are often uncommon and difficult to find. Also, birds are scared off tourist routes. I moved from elsewhere in Europe and generally know how to find many birds, like the Three-toed Woodpecker. Basically, they need high density of dead spruces, at...

About books of birds in Switzerland, I would welcome a book with locations of typical Swiss alpine birds close to convenient transport. Many mountain specialities like Wallcreeper or Ptarmigan are not easily found by random hiking. And birding sites described are usually lowland lakes and...

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Spring is coming, there are displaying small birds and... bigger birds. This one was in fading evening light. It is a pleasure to see spring display of some undisturbed birds. Black Grouse will be soon active in the mountains, too!

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

When I started birding in Switzerland, I started collecting all the Alpine specialities. One mountain animal I still did not see is Snow Vole. They are sometimes reported by chance, even under tourist huts and rest places. Anybody?

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Swiss winter is not a bad time for owls. They call all year. I saw Pygmy Owl several times in Switzerland. It is widespread in the spruce forests on the lower mountains, both Jura, Alps and lower hills. Nevertheless, all observations are hidden by default on the Swiss portal ornitho, which I...
