Haha, serving on a rarities Committee would not be one of my dream jobs that's for sure. I see there's a South African Shelduck with the geese flock there now, sounds like a mass zoo breakout ;)

They’ve prompted quite a twitch, some of the top Swiss listers have been to see them today as they are unringed and with a big group of Greylag (and oddly two Barnacle Geese, so personally I’m not sure that’s a good sign for future acceptance, still a lot of ‘insurance ticking’ going on in case...

What a brilliant idea! 5CHF per person to be rowed across, you could be onto something there, it’s certainly a slog to walk both sides in one visit:(

Well, the rain isn’t due to start till this evening Mike ;) At least it will be mild and wet instead of cold and wet for the next few days ( it’s being so cheerful that keeps me going…). I see the Snow Bunting is still present at Fanel/ Cudrefin, boy does that site get some cracking birds!!

Also a ‘new’ Kittiwake at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, two weeks after the last sightings, looks to be a healthy ( for now at least..) 1st winter bird from photos on Ornitho.ch

Sadly a few found dead while a few others continue to be seen heading down the Rhône. As well as the odd Little Gulls, a rarer lost seabird today, a Sabine’s Gull in a village in the Jura at 900m altitude, that’s almost 3000ft in ‘old money’! : Détail de l'observation - www.ornitho.ch

    Switzerland 2022…and all that Jazz!

Yes, to prove your point Mike: Détail de l'observation - www.ornitho.ch Some Little Gulls associated with this ‘wreck’ too, on Lake Geneva/Leman yesterday. Still, some of the Kittiwake have filtered down the Rhône ( reports from the Haute Savoie/Savoie border yesterday and today) so perhaps...

Whereabouts is the Bluetail Mike, I think it might be a 1st record for Switzerland ?

Good to see a few Yellow-browed Warblers turning up even in landlocked Switzerland, a very noisy one in a Geneva park today!

Re Pygmy Cormorant, they breed not far away in Italy the Po Delta area. Penduline Tit are not uncommon in Switzerland in the two migration seasons, see: Login - www.ornitho.ch

No, I noticed it reported on Ornitho.ch, I’ve never actually been there, I’ve been to Col de Bretolet once in September which was great (walked up from the French side), I’ll be making a rare incursion into Switzerland on Friday to try and see some waders around Yverdon (maybe Enea the friendly...

You are spot on J, avian threats a single call, terrestrial threat - repeated calls, see this summary of a study in Italy attached (I hope!) : https://www.researchgate.net/publication/248910078_Alarm_calling_in_Alpine_marmot_Marmota_marmota_L_evidence_for_semantic_communication

The most famous Swiss one is the one at the Col indeed, it’s a major ringing site too. The site on the Rhône is at Chevrier in Haute-Savoie, by the Défilé de l’Ecluse where two Napoleonic forts overlook a strategic gorge. The daily totals are on trektellen : Défilé de l'Ecluse - Chevrier (74)...

It certainly is for the Swifts and Black Kites, they counted over 24,000 of the former past the migration watchpoint just down the Rhône from Geneva on 26July!

Yes indeed, the reintroduction schemes such as in the Cévennes have been a great success.

Non breeding birds that come every year Mc, immatures mostly from southern France (though one satellite tagged bird around the region last week came up from the Pyrenees) maybe one day……..

Big news from the Wild West of Switzerland, keen eyed birder Bastien Guibert found breeding Pallid Swift right in the center of Geneva yesterday o_O Quite a local twitch going on this morning it seems! Cracking photos on Ornitho already: Détail de l'observation - www.ornitho.ch

Sounds like you’re giving Mike the full Swiss birding experience! If you’ve got any energy (or petrol ;)) left this little gem is singing away in Oberwald canton: Détail de l'observation - www.ornitho.ch A rare event to have a singing Little Bunting in Switzerland I imagine!

Brilliant news, observers must have assumed the Goshawk killed it but it survived, some very happy Swiss twitchers today no doubt!

One bird Mc, the first Swiss record since 2010 and unfortunately was killed by a Goshawk later on today.

Not that unusual it seems, I did a quick check back to 2017 on Ornitho.ch and in some years there has been the odd one into mid May, I remember when I lived by the English Channel we would often see Great Northerns well into May, even doing their amazing call at times!
