    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Had a quick break in Cyprus, which the guides said would be great for birds, but it was intensely disappointing. I was there more for the archaeology, but even on that sort of trip I usually get something fun, like hoopoe in North Macedonia or green bee-eater in Egypt. I think I only saw about...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

In my attempt to get the least impressive tick in the thread, with a poor sighting of a very common bird...sparrowhawk. Now am wondering if I've seen them before and assumed they were kestrels.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Standing on a boom with some black-headed gulls...common gull. Could be the most mundane entry on this thread...

First one this year? Lockdown obviously hitting hard. Pied flycatcher at Malham Tarn in Yorkshire.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

I don't know if this is a common rock thrush or a blue rock thrush, but, either way, it is a first for me...spotted gazing over the sea at Catalan Bay, Gibraltar, this morning.

Alpine swifts in Berne. Dozens of them flocking around a bridge in the old city centre, and a few of them swooping around in the centre itself. Damn difficult to photograph though...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Avocet at Middleton Lakes near Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. Being bullied by a black-headed gull. I haven't finished my checklist yet, but I think that could be my 500th species. Depends on how many subspecies I've jotted down...

Grey plover, very distantly, on the rocks of Casablanca. Last of a dozen or so on an historical trip to Morocco.

With some new spots, it can be one of those where you squint into the distance, wonder what it is, take a better look, perhaps pursue it a little if it hops away, and finally you realize it's something you've never seen before. Less expected is when a flock of half-a-dozen basically hops about...

Western rock nuthatch, hopping around the citadel of Mycenae. Handsome little thing, like all nuthatches.

Thanks - I thought it was a bit weird, but if it is a young one that explains it. Looks nothing like its parents... In which case, ringed plover, same day, but on Walney Island.

A lost-looking little auk at Roa Island, Cumbria, UK. It swam into a rocky area under a lifeboat station and then couldn't work out how to do a u-turn. Took a while to get back out. I'm going to con everyone at work it was a penguin.

Spotted flycatcher in Elgin, Morayshire, yesterday. Had never seen a flycatcher in the UK but it was doing the classic flycatcher thing of darting out, grabbing, and darting back. Which made it easy to spot as it was feeding every dozen seconds or so. And then helpfully perched prominently...

Little trip to the Balkans and got four new ones, the last of which being a great reed warbler in Lake Ohrid, in North Macedonia (or the Former Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia perhaps).

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

I must have seen and heard these loads of times before, but never clearly enough or with enough knowledge to ID it definitively. But at Oswestry Hillfort I got lucky as one flew pretty much right overhead, singing away... ...a skylark! And I got a couple of pics before he soared a ludicrous...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

A couple of mucky pups in a pond near Doncaster - little grebes. Loved the way they dived after food; they swam so near to the surface that you could follow their route from the ripples and bubbles. It's as if they were the world's worst spies trying to infiltrate underwater.
