    Apparently I should have stuck with my first thought. 😸 The head and neck patterning is Corncrake, the apparently heavily barred flanks may well have been caused by maladjusted contrast.

    I would concur. A rare bird in the Western Palearctic. Well spotted, I saw this picture a while back but didn’t look too closely.
