I saw Great Grey Shrike today, which turned out to be an addition to the world list! A short search last week (after I had heard about it) had been fruitless, but the bird resides in a huge sand/gravel quarry with only one viewpoint. I had hoped one would show up on my local patch, but it is...

The first Spotted Redshank on my local patch for four years was an unexpected addition to my green list.

The last lifer I cycled to was a Rustic Bunting in Noordwijk (NL), back in 2002 (when I still lived close to the coast). I did see a few lifers by public transport after that, with the last one being the famous Cley White-crowned Sparrow. A lifer within cycling distance in Germany seems...

Two plovers added to my list (Common Ringed and European Golden), sadly both heard only!

I was too lazy to cycle to a Purple Heron that was 1.5 h away... It was also much easier to photograph from the car (I'll stick to that excuse). (Middle Spotted Woodpecker is not too hard to find for me, but I still enjoyed adding it to my "house list" this week!)

I was on about two Penduline Tits a year when I started birding at my current location, but it's been four years since I saw one... The next four weeks are the best time of the year. I always hope for Ortolan Bunting, Tawny Pipit and Dotterel in early September, but it's been another blank year...

Well I missed Nightjar this year which breeds mightily close... just not at its traditional spot this year. I usually just cycle 5 km, look at the sky and go home. But with no daily commute to the office, I need to move in some other way! Also the Eifel, one of my favourite areas that requires...

After my holidays (which despite multiple 10 hour walks in the mountains I really cannot classify as green) I went for a 90 km bike ride to the river Rhine today which delivered Yellow-legged Gull, Spoonbill, Little Egret (the only twitch of the lot) and best of all a Black Stork.

I've driven through the North York Moors and anyone mad enough to cycle there definitely earns my highest respect!

Best of luck with the albatross! I made two unsuccessful trips to Helgoland (which were otherwise no punishment) for it. Sylt (a six hour drive at least) was too far for me. I saw Black Swan on my local patch, but adding that to my list is really, really pushing it!

Another nice surprise today: Melodious Warbler. The second one I found locally in ten years. Even more surprisingly an addition for the world list. Unfortunately an attempt at refinding a Lesser Spotted Eagle yesterday failed: that would have been a nice addition with any mode of transport!

Northern Ruhr Area, Germany. There had been a few dozen in the Low Countries in recent days, so I was (if ever so slightly) hopeful.

A most excellent addition to my green & patch list: two Griffon Vultures migrating past this morning! (Can I hear Gerald yawning?)

Had to search too far back for the list!

Sadly I don't manage to see them every year anymore, but Gerald really should have managed. Another one that used to be common is Grey Partridge, which I happened to add today (it was nicely quiet with everyone watching Germany lose). I don't think all the birds around here are truly wild, but...

I should try for Nightjar again this week. A non-green search at my favourite spot last weekend failed. At least I should have the opportunity to add Long-eared Owl (there were young birds calling).

I finally managed to find a Little Owl, although they occur really close to my home. The curfew was a bit of a spanner in the works!

After two weeks without a functioning bicycle I am mobile again, but my addition comes from the home office: a Serin was calling from a nearby spruce. I see about one a year locally and most of these in flight only.

That obviously means I forgot to add Whinchat, how inconsiderate of me!

I still have a few nightbirds that I should be able to add. I have no excuse now the curfew is lifted (do unsuitable weather, laziness and incompetence count?) Edit: Montague's Harrier today!

50 m or so. I live at 35 m. It's quite a climb for a Dutchman! It has more to do with habitat. The Common Treecreepers are mostly in places with big spruce and oak trees.

Green Listing 2021 - Joint thread

After a couple of attempts I finally managed to hear (but not see) Common Treecreeper to get it onto the green list. It is very local around here (I have found just three sites within a 10 mile radius): Short-toed Treecreeper dominates.

Green Listing 2021 - Joint thread

A 70 km bike ride provided Common Quail (heard only of course...), which I couldn't believe was new for the world list.

Golden Oriole today. That's always a nice surprise on my local patch as they occur about once a year. This morning was exceptional: I heard one and saw another – another observer even heard a third bird simultaneously!
