Have you seen something to suggest it might be a hybrid? I see nothing (yet) to suggest that. The flank feathers are adult type, so it is moulting out of eclipse, which would explain the narrow white vertical breast stripe. The reduced yellow around the face and apparent lack of white line by...

Here’s another Caspian-type taken at west end on Saturday morning. Initially I was expecting it to be X90A, but when it walked out of the water I noticed it wasn’t ringed. Another bird with a hazelnut colour-eyed, and one that in a distant roost might likely be called a Caspian Gull. I suspect...

    2+6 = 8 😉 I assume you mean 2+5

No, none of the locals know anything about this. We only saw the usual birds. Do you know who saw it and were all three on view at the same time?

    Grafham Water

Thanks Matthew - as Mark Golly said in the Twitter comments - currently, this bird would pass muster as a nouveau-Caspian (some observers are more lenient about the mixing of genes than others), but its not a classic Pontic Gull. One thing is for sure, as Caspian's continue to march westwards as...

A number of experienced Gull watchers have commented on the Twitter thread also expressing opinion that the bird is very likely not a pure Caspian Gull. These can be seen here Another educational bird.

I assume this bird, from the 18th, is the same bird? IMHO, there are a few things which suggest this isn't a Caspian Gull. The tip of p10 is usually pure white (lacking the small black tip), but more importantly is doesn't show the pale inner web to the tongue of p10 on underside...

Thanks Matthew - do you have any images of the open upper wing? I don't think its a pure Yellow-legged Gull, but it just doesn't feel like a Caspian Gull to me (but it may well be one)

Hi Matthew, Is this the Caspian Gull? I saw this bird on the boom this evening, and have some video on my Twitter page. I was perplexed by its ID. Initially I thought it looked okay, but it seemed to have yellow-legs in real life (pink in my video and your images), and the legs looked short...

I’d need to check back through the database of all previous Grafham records (that I’m still compiling), but I know it has happened at least once previously, but this will have been back in the 70’s/80’s. It certainly hasn’t happened since I’ve been birding at Grafham (since 1997)

Same birds Matthew. Present off Mander still in the afternoon, and they were Pale-bellied Brent's - this is the first record of this race for Grafham, and just the 4th for Cambs (the last was 2-3 decades ago). Myself and Mark Ward had some nice flight views of them, which confirmed them as...

Apparently 41 roosted at Barleycraft lake last night (no doubt including this flock of 31). Incredible that Grafham Water has still only had one Cattle Egret record to date.

Good to see an old-school, proper record shot Matt. This is the 12th confirmed site record of Leach’s Petrel for Grafham Water. Incredibly, it was 7th that I’ve seen there.

Assume the Bittern was in lagoons. But not seen by neither Rich P, Colin, Nigel Butler or I. interesting mid-summer record though. Garganey could have been anywhere!

I spent quite a bit of time looking for them on Sunday too. Flat calm. No sign. This is the first visit this year without seeing one, but then one was reported on RBA in evening by sailing club (your sighting I assume Matthew) - which is the only area I didn't check yesterday - I think its safe...

Hi Matthew, only just seen this. I had the totals at 6 already for the 2020/2021 winter - the 2 adults, followed by 4 juveniles. How are you calculating 6 birds this winter? Personally, I think there has been 4 birds all month, and they are just elusive and mobile. I often see just 2 birds on...

Not that I know of. It was sent to the county recorder who confirmed the ID.

The Purple Sandpiper was photographed by a fisherman. Been a few years now since the last site record (they’ve become very rare, although I think I’ve seen c.4 there previously). Typically it appeared on the day my car was having a service, and I thought at the time that the Misty conditions...

Fantastic to see a photo of all 4 Divers together. I saw three this morning, but all at different places around the reservoir. Other notables included the Great White Egret still, 22 Little Egrets and a vocal adult Peregrine.
